3 Teacher Ram: Aiming to reach all learners anytime, anywhere in whatever way we

4 can, the Department of Education, Region V, Schools Division Office of Albay, and

5 Malinao National High School, School of Character, offers a Radio-Based Instruction

6 in response to the DepEd’s Basic Education - Learning Continuity Plan for grade 8

7 learners entitled: conditional statements

8 (Play: if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands)

9 Teacher Ram: yehey! Get in the class everybody; it’s me again your young teacher

10 teacher Ram

11 Teacher hazel: and I am teacher hazel

12 Both: your young teachers on the radio

13 Teacher Ram: oh my! What a nostalgic song? I can still remember myself singing

14 that song when I was little kid but the original version of it. How about you Ma’am?

15 Teacher hazel: yes, me too teacher Ram! It is a nursery song; we used to sing that

16 during our elementary years. And also, it has something to do with our lesson for

17 today.

18 Teacher Ram: Indeed, so learners join us as we dive in and learn about conditional

19 or IF-THEN statements. Like what we always say, mathematics is all around us,

20 whether we like it or not life is number!

6 Teacher RAM: But before we start, let’s have our checklist first. MODULES or

7 LEARNING ACTIVITY Sheets in Mathematics 8 (check), Ballpen (check), notebook

8 (check), worksheets (check), and of course snacks ( check). Are we loud and

9 clear? (Check na check)

10 Next, Look for place in your home where you can feel comfortable and safe, (short

11 pause) and most importantly, prepare yourself in listening. ALWAYS remember to

12 take down important notes.

13 And if you have questions about our lesson for today, you can directly text me at

14 09637277093; again, our text line is 09637277093

15 Teacher hazel: And if you are watching via FB Live, just search our school’s FB

16 Page, DepEd Tayo, Malinao National High School, You can drop a message in

17 the comment box regarding your queries. Remember to keep comments friendly and

18 about the lesson.

19 Teacher RAM: today is the thirteenth day of the month of April year 2022 and the

20 time is ten twenty in the morning.

21 Sit back, relax, and enjoy cause here in 101.5, I CARE FM.

1 Teacher RAM: a conditional statement or IF-THEN statement is composed of two

2 clauses or statements: first is the hypothesis also known as if-clause and the

3 second statement is conclusion or the then-clause. If we are going to represent it

4 we use lower case Letter “p” for the if-clause of the hypothesis statement and lower

5 case letter “q” for the then-clause or conclusion statement. With that we have

6 conditional statement as “if p then q”. Basically conditional statement is a

7 statement that implies condition. Just like in the nursery song “IF you’re

8 happy, clap your hands” the hypothesis is you are happy, the conclusion is

9 you clap your hands.

10 We use mathematical reasoning which for us to analyse a given hypothesis without

11 any reference to a particular context in giving the conclusion.

12 A hypothesis (plural hypotheses) is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon

13 or a situation, a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test

14 logical or empirical consequences or simply, the statement after the word “if” is

15 called the hypothesis.

16 And a conclusion is the necessary consequence of the proposition or the possible

17 outcome. It means the end or finish of an event or process, a judgment or decision

18 reached by reasoning or simply the statement after the word “then”.

19 UPBEAT MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

20 Teacher hazel: lets’ have an example: identify the hypothesis and the conclusion of

21 the following statements.

22 1. If you study well, then you will get good grades.

23 What do you think is the hypothesis? Very good, the hypothesis is, “you study well”

24 and the conclusion is “you will get good grades” how about in the second statement?

1 2. If it rains tomorrow, then the tennis match will be postponed.

2 UPBEAT MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

3 The hypothesis “it rains tomorrow” and the conclusion is “the tennis match will be

4 postponed”. Next!

5 3. If two segments are congruent, then they have the same measures.

6 Is the statement “they have the same measure” our hypothesis? No, because the

7 statement “they have the same measure” is the conclusion and the hypothesis is

8 “two segments are congruent”.

9 Did you notice something? Very good, in determining the hypothesis and conclusion

10 we do not include the words if and then respectively. We simply get the statement

11 after the word if for our hypothesis and get the statement after the word then for the

12 conclusion. It’s not that difficult isn’t?

13 UPBEAT MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

14 Teacher RAM: lets’ have few more examples, determine whether the underlined

15 statement is a hypothesis or conclusion:

16 1. If a student seldom goes to class, then he will get a failing grade.

17 The underline statement is he will get a failing grade. (Read twice) Is it a hypothesis

18 or a conclusion? The answer is, very good, it is a conclusion

19 2. If a student is good in Mathematics, then he is smart.

20 The underline statement is “a student is good in Mathematics”. (Read twice) If your

21 answer is a hypothesis then you got it right! And if not, it ok, keeps practicing. Now,

22 what if the word “if” and “then” are already not included in the given? Can you still

23 identify the hypothesis and the conclusion?

1 Teacher hazel: consider the statement: getting enough sleep is good to your

2 health

3 What do you think is the hypothesis and the conclusion? In this example, the trick is

4 to understand well the concepts and definitions of hypothesis and conclusion. And

5 lastly is to understand analyse well the statement. According to the statement

6 getting enough sleep then it is good for your health. Which means the result of

7 getting enough sleep is good health. With that, the hypothesis is: getting enough

8 sleep and the conclusion is good to your health. Now you try it.

9 1. An integer that ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 is an odd number.

10 Which are the hypothesis and the conclusion?

11 Hypothesis; An integer that ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9

12 CONCLUSION: It is an odd number

13 2. All prime numbers are numbers with no other factor aside from 1 and itself.

14 What do you think is the hypothesis and the conclusion?

15 Hypothesis; numbers with no other factor aside from 1 and itself

16 CONCLUSION: All prime numbers

17 If you get right, you did great! Congratulations! If not, try to do more practice

19 Teacher RAM: there you have it learners; For your final activity, determine the

20 hypothesis and the conclusion of the following statements.

21 1. Sheryl studied her lesson and pass the exam

22 2. An scalene triangle is a triangle with no congruent sides

23 3. If two lines are parallel, then they will never meet

24 4. If x is divisible by 2, then x is an even number

13 Teacher hazel: And this is the end of our lesson for today. I hope you had fun

14 learning while listening in our mathematics class on air, here in 101.5 I Care FM, the

15 official learning station of Malinao National High School, School of Character!

16 This has been your teacher on board, Teacher hazel and teacher Ram,

17 Both: your teachers on the radio.

18 Teacher Ram: Saying good morning and leaving you with a QOTD or quote of the

19 day from Martin Luther King, Jr: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk,

20 if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

21 With great hopes we would be together on air on our next episode, same time, and

22 same station. God bless and goodbye!

23 Both: because here in101.5 I care FM we care!
