2 RADIO TEACHER: In this broadcast episode, we are going to discuss about 

3 : the use of imagery and diction. Do you know what imagery

and 

4 : diction mean? How are these used in literary pieces? You’ll 

5 : have a deeper understanding of the concept as we go on 

6 : with our broadcast. So, stay tuned and listen intently.

8 RADIO TEACHER: For you to be guided and well directed, let’s build and 

9 : enrich your understanding of the concepts first by answering

10 : some basic questions.  Are you fond of reading literary pieces?

11 : (PAUSE) That’s great!  What literary genre do you often read?

12 : (PAUSE) Hmmm. Of course, you vary in choice or preference.

13 : Can you see in your mind the things being presented in the 

14 : text? (PAUSE) If you answered yes, that’s excellent! That is 

15 : what we call “Imagery”.  Imagery refers to the “mental 

16 : pictures” that readers experience when reading literature.

18 RADIO TEACHER: This time, let me again ask you few questions. When 

19 : reading a piece of literature, do you encounter difficulties in 

20 : understanding some terms used? (PAUSE) or Do you consider

21 : the use and choice of words important? (PAUSE) If yes, you 

22 : are indeed considering diction. Diction is the choice and use of

1 : words and phrases in speech or in writing. Word choice is the 

2 : most important element of style for you to understand.

5 : our lesson, I hope you were able to build your foundation in

11 : page 4. I will be reading lines from the text “How my brother 

12 : Leon brought Home a Wife” by Manuel E. Arguilla. Determine

13 : whether the author used imagery or diction in each line from 

14 : the text. Write IM for Imagery and DI for Diction. The lines may

15 : either be IM or DI or both. Are you holding your paper and 

16 : ballpen now? (PAUSE) Let’s start!

19 : of Ca Celin with a quick delicate grace. She was lovely. She 

20 : was tall. She looked up through my brother with a smile and 

21 : her forehead was on a level on his mouth. 

22 : What did the author use in these lines? (PAUSE)

2 : I-M and D-I in the lines given.

5 : papayas are in bloom. (PAUSE) Did you answer I-M? 

6 : Congratulations! You are doing great!

7 : The third line is: He swallowed and brought up to his mouth 

8 : more cud and the sound of his insides was like a drum. 

9 : (PAUSE) Did you write I-M or D-I? That’s right!

11 RADIO TEACHER : For the fourth line: I laid on Labang’s massive neck and

12 : said to her, “You may scratch his forehead now.” What’s your

13 : answer? (PAUSE) Certainly, It uses imagery!

14 : Number 5: The sun was in our eyes for it was dripping into the

15 : bright sea. The sky was wide and deep and very blue above us

16 : but along the saw-tooth rim of the Katayaghan hills to the 

17 : southwest flamed huge masses of clouds. (PAUSE) Did you 

18 : answer both I-M and D-I ? You are absolutely right! We 

19 : proceed with the next lines.

3 : cheek. (PAUSE) Is your answer I-M or D-I? You are doing

5 : Number 7: “Look Noel, yonder is our start!” Deep surprise and

6 : gladness were in her voice. Very low in the west, almost 

7 : touching the ragged edge of the bank was the star, the biggest

8 : and the brightest in the sky. (PAUSE) What is your answer? Is

9 : it I-M or D-I? Again, you are correct. It could be both I-M and 

10 : D-I.

9 : imagery used in the lines that I will be reading. Your choices 

10 : are: sense of sight, smell, taste, touch or hearing.
