7 the module, and he is asking for your honesty. Don’t worry if you

8 answer incorrectly. By the end of our lesson, the questions of Kuya

5 is a paragraph about books. If you have answered the crossword

6 correctly, you would be able to understand it completely.

7 Will you read aloud with me? (PAUSE) Excellent!

8 Books are the oldest source of information that never gets old.

9 Even before, when the oldest radio has not yet been invented,

10 books were able to provide information to the people around the

11 world. Books had been an essential part of human lives since the

12 old times. They have been used for telling stories, preserving

13 history, and sharing information about our world. The first ever

14 recognized books were the ancient scrolls. These are rolled up

15 manuscripts made from Papyrus plant and ranges from fourteen

16 (14) to fifty-two (52) feet wide when unraveled. The second type of

17 book was the book to-go of the Romans. More similar to the style

18 of books today, the Romans created some of the first codices

19 (plural of codex) from as early as the 1st century. The codex was

20 more durable and compact than a scroll as it was made with

21 parchment paper and bound with wooden covers. Information is

22 important and books had been a necessity for everyone. The need

23 for books resulted to the discovery of printed books. The first

-MORE-

1 recorded printed book in history is the Diamond Sutra of

2 Mahayana Buddhism. Books in schools are all product of

3 printing. These modern days, books are now in electronic form.

4 Electronic book or e-book for short is the most convenient type of

5 books as long as you have gadgets to read on. Books may change

6 over time, but it will never get tired nor old in giving us vast

7 information around the world.

8 Shall we read it again? Or we can now answer the questions?

9 Brilliant! Let us try to answer the five (5) questions found on page

10 seven (7). (PAUSE) Question number one: What is the source of

11 information mentioned in the paragraph? Do you know what it is?

12 (PAUSE) Superb! The source of information mentioned in the

13 paragraph is books. (CLAPPING SFX)

14 Number 2: What are the types of books? (LONGER PAUSE)

15 One is the ancient scrolls, (PAUSE) another is the codex or

16 codices for plural, (PAUSE) next are the printed books, (PAUSE)

17 and the latest are what we call electronic books, or e-books.

18 Fantastic! (CLAPPING SFX) How about question number 3?

19 How does each type of book differ from each other? (PAUSE)

20 That’s right! (CLAPPING SFX) Not only do they differ in

21 appearance, but they also differ in the way they are written and

22 where they are written.

23 Next question: Why do you think we need books? (PAUSE)

24 Marvelous! (CLAPPING SFX) Books give us all sorts of

1 information and can also be a source of entertainment.

2 Last question: How do you imagine our

3 world without books? (PAUSE) Yes! (CLAPPING SFX) It

4 would not only be a boring world, but it would be an ignorant one.

5 Without books, we cannot properly store and transfer information.

6 Let us take a short break, then we will dig deeper on paragraphs.

9 RADIO TEACHER: Well, before we move on to the next part of the lesson, have you

10 answered all the five questions correctly in the previous lesson?

11 (PAUSE) Great! Let us now understand what a paragraph means

12 and its parts. (PAUSE)

13 A paragraph is a group of sentences which focuses on a single

14 idea. (REPEAT) Go back to the first sentence of the paragraph

we have read (PAUSE) Books are the oldest source of
15
information
16 that never gets old. Can you guess what the paragraph is about

17 just by reading the first sentence? (PAUSE) Brilliant! This first

18 sentence is what we call a topic sentence. Page 8 of your module

19 says that the topic sentence in a paragraph gives the reader insight

20 or idea into what it is all about. It is located at the beginning of a

21 paragraph. But sometimes, you can find it at the middle or end of

22 a paragraph. You have to read well the paragraph so that you can

23 be able to identify correctly the topic sentence.

-MORE-
PARTS OF A PARAGRAPH… 999

1 Aside from the topic sentence, there are other sentences in a

2 paragraph. These are called supporting sentences. (PAUSE) If a

3 paragraph has only one topic sentence, it has several supporting

4 sentences. What are supporting sentences? (PAUSE) Supporting

5 sentences make up the body of a paragraph. It expands the topic

6 sentence in detail to develop the idea presented on it. That is why

7 it is also called as supporting details. The number of sentences

8 vary but the typical paragraph should have two to five supporting

9 sentences. (PAUSE) Meaning, each supporting sentence has a

10 relationship or connection with the topic sentence. It would not

11 be considered a paragraph if the sentences do not connect with

12 each other.

13 The last part of a paragraph is called the concluding sentence.

14 Again, the last part of a paragraph is called the concluding

15 sentence. (PAUSE) The concluding sentence marks the end of the

16 paragraph and it summarizes or raises the key point of the

17 paragraph. This is the last sentence of a paragraph.

18 Importantly, in recognizing a simple paragraph, you have to

19 consider all of its parts – from the beginning up to the last

20 sentence. (PAUSE) To help you understand the parts better, the

21 boy found in page 9 recaps the topic sentence, supporting

22 sentences, and concluding sentence.

17 don’t you stand up and stretch your arms and legs? That way,

18 blood circulation will move better from your heart to your brain.

19 That’s it. Stretch your arms upwards, reach for the sky. Then

20 bend backwards as if you’re dodging Matrix style. Bend forward

21 and try to touch your toes. Doesn’t that feel good?

12 of technology to us. As long as you have access to the internet or

13 has load, no matter how far or near the person you wanted to talk

14 with, cellphone can do it for you. However, aside from its good

15 features especially in communication, there are still incidents

16 reporting the harmful effect of cellphone to our health. Over-

17 exposure to radiation is unhealthy. Cellphone is functional but

18 users must be aware and prevent its bad effects by decreasing the

19 number of hours spent in chatting and playing games on their

20 cellphones. (PAUSE) Can you tell me which of the three

21 sentences below is the best topic sentence? (PAUSE). Brilliant!

2 immediately after recovering his energy from miles of walk in

3 going home. When done, he reviews all his lessons of the day. All
his assignments were prepared at night and everything is ready
4
for
5 tomorrow. He focused his review on their Mathematics lesson

6 about fractions. When teacher Maxima entered their classroom,

7 everyone was told to prepare a clean paper. Adrian got a perfect

8 score because he studied the lessons well. (PAUSE). What do you

9 think is the topic sentence, A, B, or C? (PAUSE) Superb!

10 (CLAPPING SFX)

11 The correct answer is B. (PAUSE) And the last paragraph:

12 The sender transmits the message while the receiver accepts the

13 message. The most important factor in communication is the good

14 delivery of the message to ensure better understanding which will

15 result in a satisfying answer. Moreover, the tool in communication

16 is as important as the message being sent because it is the

17 channel by which the message is delivered. (PAUSE) Last one,

4 would want to have,” (PAUSE) I want you to look at the three

5 sentences below what I have read in page 14. What do you think is

6 the sentence which is not relevant to the topic sentence? When I

7 say not relevant, what I mean is that the meaning of the sentence

8 may not be needed to complete the paragraph. (REPEAT)

10 not relevant is C.

11 Moving on, which sentence is not relevant to the topic sentence,

13 really are good at this. Why do you think the answer is B?
