1 MUSIC 5 SECS AND FADE UNDER

2 HOST As I have said, our topic today is on determining the meaning of

3 words and expressions that reflect local culture through context

4 clues. But before we go deeper our lesson, let me ask you this

5 question based on this situation: While reading an article, you

6 encountered an unfamiliar word, what are you going to do to know

7 its meaning? (PAUSE)

8 I believe most of you will say that you are going to look for its

9 meaning in the dictionary. Dictionary nowadays are even more

10 convenient because aside from the printed ones, dictionaries can

11 also be installed as mobile applications in our smartphones.

12 Thanks to our continuously improving technology!

13 But here’s another question: What if at the moment you encountered

14 the unfamiliar word, a dictionary in any form is not available? How

15 will know its meaning? (PAUSE)

16 Don’t panic! Today’s lesson will help you determine the meaning of

17 such unfamiliar words even without the use of a dictionary. Sounds

18 interesting, right? We shall discuss further after this short reminder.

19 Dear learners, please stand by.

333…Context Clues

1 MUSIC 5 SECS AND FADE UNDER

2 TEACHER Good morning grade 8 learners! I am your Teacher _____________

3 Today, we will be talking about context clues. At the end of this

4 lesson, you are expected to be able to determine the meaning of

5 words and expressions that reflect local culture through context

6 clues. Are you ready?

7 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

8 TEACHER Let us start!

9 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

10 TEACHER Please turn your module to page 5. Let’s read the poem Context

11 clues. Follow me as I read the poem. Let’s start in 3, 2, 1.

12 Tick tock, tick tock, I am stuck!

13 How can I unlock? How can I unlock?

14 When unfamiliar words are the ones that block!

15 Strategize, strategize, vocabulary wise!

16 Familiarize, familiarize, the words that arise

17 Hints here, signals there, clues are everywhere

18 Categorize, conceptualize and then contextualize

19 Context clues are the ones that guide.

20 (READ SLOWLY)

21 Let’s do it again! (READ AGAIN, MODERATE SPEED)

22 The poem tells us what to do when we encounter unfamiliar words

23 while reading a text. We have been mentioning the words context

24 clues. What are context clues? By looking at the words

25 context and clues themselves, it directs us to look for clues in the

444…Context Clues

1 context. Let us have these examples in page 6 of your module.

2 Take note of the underlined words and let us try to give their

3 meanings.

4 Sentence 1: As a writer, Dr. Jose Rizal used several pseudonyms

5 so as not to reveal his identity. (READ SLOWLY, EMPHASIZE

6 UNDERLINED WORD) The underlined word is pseudonyms. What

7 Do you think is the meaning of this word? (PAUSE)

8 The answer is pen names. How did we arrive at this meaning? What

9 clues in the sentences suggest this meaning? It is the phrase not to

10 reveal that hinted us that pseudonym means pen name. Let’s have

11 the next sentence. Sentence 2: We should be prudent in what we

12 say so as not to hurt the feelings of others. What do you think is the

13 meaning of the word prudent? The answer is careful. What are the

14 words in the sentence that suggest its meaning? The phrase not to

15 hurt. Prudent in other words, is careful. If you substitute this word for

16 prudent, it will not change the message of the sentence.

17 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

18 TEACHER Context clues are hints found within a sentence, a paragraph or a

19 passage that a reader can use to understand the meaning of

20 unfamiliar words. Learning the meaning of a word based on how it

21 is used in the sentence is the most practical way to build vocabulary

22 since a dictionary may not always be available when you encounter

23 such unknown words. So even if you are not using a dictionary, you

24 can determine the meaning of a difficult word through the clues

25 provided by the words surrounding it and as aided by your prior

555…Context Clues

1 knowledge. Thus, how the word is used in the sentence helps you

2 understand its meaning.

3 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

4 TEACHER There are different types of context clues. Please read pages 7 to 8

5 of your module.

6 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

7 TEACHER We have there the following by definition, by synonym, by antonym,

8 By Comparison, by example, by explanation, by cause and effect, by

9 list or series of clues and lastly, by inference. These will help you

10 Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

11 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

12 TEACHER Sometimes, unfamiliar words come from those that reflect local

13 culture. These words are commonly found in stories and

14 poems where the author uses words and expressions to

15 highlight the culture of people coming from a specific locality

16 or region. Through these words as well as style of writing,

17 the readers get a glimpse of the culture from which a literary

18 piece originates. Interestingly, these words have made it to the

19 Mainstream English language. You can determine the meaning

20 Of these words that reflect local culture by looking into hints or

21 Clues from the words that surrounds it in the sentence.

22 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

23 TEACHER For example, this sentence from Amador T. Daguio’s

24 The Wedding Dance: Could she not, alone among all women,

25 dance like a bird tripping for grains on the ground, beautifully

666…Context Clues

1 timed to the beat of the gangsas? (READ SLOWLY, TWICE)

2 Let’s focus on the word gangsa. As someone who does not

3 know the meaning of this word may study carefully the

4 sentence where it was used. The words dance and beat

5 found in the same sentence, are clues that could tell us that

6 gangsa is a musical instrument.

7 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

8 TEACHER Let’s have another example. This time it’s a sentence from

9 The Witch by Edilberto K. Tiempo.

10 The woman was soaking her sparse gray hair with the gogo

11 suds. (READ SLOWLY, TWICE) The unfamiliar word is gogo.

12 The words soaking, hair and suds as used in the same sentence

13 would hint us that gogo is something used to cleanse the hair.

14 Gangsa and gogo are both unfamiliar words that reflect a local

15 Culture of localities or regions where these words are used.

16 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

17 Now, I will give you some ways to help you build your skill

18 In determining the meaning of unfamiliar words through

19 context clues. First, read the sentence carefully and look for

20 words surrounding the unfamiliar word because these could be

21 hints or clues to its meaning. Second, search for explanations

22 or descriptions that include details or examples. Third,

23 consider all ideas before and after the unfamiliar word. You

24 may suggest different meanings at first, but choose the most

consistent and appropriate in the whole statement.
25
777…Context Clues

1 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

2 TEACHER Also remember the different types of context clues enumerated in

3 Your module namely: by definition, by synonym, by antonym, by

4 Comparison, by example, by explanation, by cause and effect, by

5 list or series of clues and lastly, by inference. These will help you

6 Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

7 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

8 TEACHER So that is all about determining the meaning of unfamiliar words that

9 reflect local culture using context clues. To recap, context clues are

10 words that are used as hints or clues to give the meaning of the

11 unfamiliar words. These are words found in text that could suggest

12 how the unfamiliar word is used in the context. Meanwhile,

13 unfamiliar words may come from those that reflect local culture

14 of localities or regions where these words are used.

15 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

16 TEACHER That’s all for our lesson today! I hope you understood what

17 context clues are and you can now determine the meaning of

18 unfamiliar words especially those that reflect local culture

19 through context clues.

20 MUSIC 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

21 TEACHER To check if you have learned something today, you will have a

22 a short quiz about our lesson which will be facilitated by our

23 Host, ____. Do your best learners! Again, this is your Radio
