2 How rich is your vocabulary? Do you often encounter unknown words as you read?

3 This can happen to any of us, but don’t worry, there are ways and strategies on how

4 to understand difficult words without opening your dictionary or asking Google or Siri.

5 Good day, Learners! I am Teacher Rhea, your podcast teacher for today’s lesson

6 in grade 8 English, quarter 1, week 1.

7 Welcome to a new venture in learning language and literature!

8 In this podcast, we will learn how to note context clues.

9 STINGER MUSIC UP TO 3 SECS THEN FADE UNDER

10 The objective for this lesson is to determine the meaning of words and expressions by

11 noting context clues.

12 STINGER MUSIC UP TO 3 SECS THEN FADE UNDER

13 Are you ready? Great!

14 Although dictionaries are helpful, the ability to comprehend the meaning of words

15 Instantly, is a skill a high school student like you should develop.

16 Decoding meaning of unfamiliar words affect our ability to understand the text

17 that we are reading. This can be done by noting context clues.

18 Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader

19 can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words.

20 Learning the meaning of a word through its use in a sentence or paragraph is the most

21 practical way to build vocabulary.

1
2 A reader must be aware that many words have several possible meanings.

3 Only by being sensitive to the circumstances in which a word is used

4 can the reader decide upon an appropriate definition to fit the context.

5 STINGER MUSIC UP TO 3 SECS THEN FADE UNDER

6 A reader should rely on context clues when an obvious clue to meaning is provided,

7 or when only a general sense of the meaning is needed for the reader’s purposes.

8 These are the different types of context clues.

9 First is Definition or Description Clue. This is the most straightforward "hint" you'll ever

10 get it defines the precise meaning of a vocabulary word in the sentence itself

11 For example: His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to

12 see. “Skeleton-like appearance” is the definition of “emaciation” in the sentence.

13 Next is Synonyms: Sentences containing synonyms use similar words and phrases

14 to a vocabulary word to help give that word meaning. For example:

15 The mountain pass was a tortuous road, winding and twisting like a snake around

16 the trees of the mountainside. In this sentence, the word “Tortuous” is synonymous to

17 the words “winding and twisting”

18 Another context clue is the antonym or opposites: Antonyms are the reverse of

19 synonyms but have the same effect. They use other words, this time opposites,

20 to define unknown vocabulary words. Example:

21 When the light brightens, the pupils of the eyes contract; however,

22 when it grows darker, they dilate. “Dilate” means the opposite of “contract.”

23 The last type of context clue that we will discuss is the Examples or Explanations

24 This type of context clue uses examples to help the reader infer the meaning of

24 a vocabulary word. Examples can be helpful illustrations as context clues.

1 In this sentence, Celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars, have fascinated

2 man through the centuries. “Celestial” objects are those in the sky or heavens.

2
3 I hope you fully understand the types of context clues I have discussed.

4 If not, you can listen to it again.

5 Can you answer some practice activities? Don’t worry I will only ask for context clues

6 that I have discussed. You may also read your SLM, LAS or LP as you listen to me.

7 If my phasing is fast you can just pause to reread the sentence before answering.

8 Listen carefully and choose for the correct meaning of the word from the options.
