1 04:47-04:52 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 5 SECS AND FADE UNDER
2 04:52-09:16 HOST: For our first lesson we are going to study about using
3 textual aids to understand a text, for example, title and
4 illustration.

5 Literature can be better understood using the sensory

6 images, which you have already learned. Determine the
7 sensory images employed in some lines of the story The
8 Aged Mother in our Activity: Five for Five in What’s In.
9 Choose and write the letter of your answer on your answer
10 sheets. (5 SEC PAUSE)
11
Well done Students! You are impressive! Let’s answer some
12 more activities:
13
14 For your Activity 2, you have to solve the puzzle below
15 represents a word and your task is to guess what each word
16 is in What’s New. This kind of puzzle is what we called
17 Rebus. A REBUS is a picture representation of a name,
work, or phrase”. Now, you can write your answers on your
18 answer sheet. (5 SEC PAUSE)

Wow! You are truly amazing!

19
What helped you answer these puzzles? (5 SEC PAUSE)

1 09:16-09:21 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 5 SECS AND FADE UNDER

2 09:21-12:24 HOST: What is it?
3 Textual aids refer to non-textual elements that help readers
4 understand the content of the text. They also refer to
5 elements that stand-out from the main text such as titles and
subtitles, bold, italicized and underlined texts. Non-textual
6
7 elements include illustrations, maps, tables, graphs and
8 charts.
9 These aids have two main functions, namely: first, to direct
10 the readers’ attention to important ideas in the text and
11 second, to provide more information as a supplement to what
12 is already written.
13
14 1. Titles and subtitles
15 2. Illustrations
Please refer to your modules for the examples.
17
18 Now, let us enhance our comprehension on how the textual
19 aids discussed help readers like you.
20
Go to our Activity: Titled Photo in What’s More. Go over the
21
22 article about Zoom and answer the questions that follow. You
23 are free to follow through with the instructions. Remember:
24 The aim of this activity is to use the titles and subtitles and
25 illustrations to better understand what the text is saying.
Great job! You are now ready for our Lesson 2!
1 12:24-12:29 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 5 SECS AND FADE UNDER
2 12:29-21:05 HOST: Howdy! I am impressed with your performance in the
3 first lesson! To keep the fire burning, we will study how to use

4 textual aids to understand a text through charts, graphs, and

5 table. Are you ready?

6 Go over to the activities in What’s In and What’s New and try

7 to answer it for yourself.

8 How do you find it?

9 Yes! In this lesson, you will learn another two textual aids
10 which are tables and graphs/charts. Since they are textual
11 aids, they have similar functions as those previously learned.
12 Let’s look to its differences.

13 A table shows information (facts and figures) that are

14 organized and arranged in columns and rows. It is used to
15 show patterns and relationships that still appeals to the
16 readers’ verbal system, meaning tables are supposed to be
17 read like a text

18 A graph, on the other hand, is defined by Google Sites (n.d.)

19 as a “chart that shows the relationship between changing
20 things”. Mind Tools Content Team (2020) stated that graphs
21 are used “when a simple table cannot adequately
22 demonstrate important relationships” of and within data. And
23 there are different types of graphs on your module! Let’s
24 check it out!

25 To check your understanding, let’s proceed to what’s more!

26 We have this activity: From the Table - Read the text and
27 express your comprehension by writing your answers to the
28 questions that follow on your answer sheet.

29 Well done! I think this is a good way to finish our Lesson 3!

1 21:05-21:08 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER
2 21:08-23:01 HOST: In the previous lessons, titles, illustrations, tables and
3 charts/graphs as textual aids have been the focus of
4 discussion. There is one more textual aid with the same
5 general function as the others, maps.

6 Maps are visual representations of selected characteristics of

7 a place, usually drawn on a flat surface. There are two
8 different kinds of maps:

9 Physical map which includes labels for features such as

10 mountains and bodies of water.

11 Political map which includes labels for features such as cities

12 and major towns, units such as states or provinces, and
13 bodies of water.

14 Let’s try to answer Bring Me to Baguio in What’s More.

15 Read the text and study its accompanying map. Choose the
16 letter of your answer and write it on your answer sheet.
To fully practiced what you have learned, the What Can I
Do’s in the module shall be your homework and do not forget
17 to answer our assessment to check yourself!
