War & Peace and Ancient Civilisations

The exam is split into two sections

1. Skills - covers both War & Peace and Ancient Civilisations. Here you have a
series of shorter questions that refer to different resources. You must use these
resources, along with your own knowledge to answer the questions.
2. Writing – this includes two extended paragraph questions.
 War & Peace paragraph – you have a choice of two questions – you
do only one
 Ancient Civilisations paragraph – you have a choice of two questions
– you do only one

Timings:
It is a TWO HOUR exam. You should spend roughly 90 minutes on the skills section, and
about 15 minutes on each of the paragraphs.
What to study:
To help you study for your Social Studies Exam, we have created a checklist. The exam looks
at all the skills content we have covered since the start of Term 3 (War & Peace and Ancient
Civilisations). Use your notes on OneNote or you class notes to help you revise.
Skills that are assessed:
Both topics:
1. Key terms and definitions
2. Extended Paragraph writing – correct structure and inclusion of specific
detail/information

5
War & Peace

2. Cartoon interpretation – looking for meaning in the images, symbols and words used in
cartoons.
3. Values continuum

Ancient Civilisations
1. Timeline construction – accurately organising key dates on a timeline
2. Mapping – use correct mapping techniques, and identify key features

Key content
You will need to have an understanding of:
 M.A.I.N causes of World War One
 Conscientious objectors
 How Ancient Romans lived in their time
 The impact of the Ancient Romans on today’s world

HOW TEACHERS MARK

When teachers are marking, we look for:

Tidy writing… I know it can be hard to keep your writing

tidy, especially when you are rushing as fast as you can! But
just remember to keep your writing readable. If we can’t read
or understand it, then we can’t give you marks.

Answering the question properly… It is very important to

fully read the question before you start writing! Does it say
‘list’ or ‘explain’? Does it say to give one example or two?
Unfortunately, we sometimes see amazing answers, but can’t
give marks if you don’t answer the question properly.

Details… When answering questions and writing paragraphs

– remember to write as many details as possible – like names
of objects, people, and places, add in dates, describe how
something is done, etc. Higher marks come with the details.
Give as many as you can!

Extra marks… As teachers, we do NOT want to fail you.

We want to see you succeed and will always look for any
extra marks we can give. That means you should answer
every question! Even if you are not sure you know the answer
– why not give it a go?! We might be able to find a point to
give you somewhere. If YOU try your best, then WE can try
our best to help you succeed.

STUDY TIPS AND TRICKS

1) Make a study timetable or routine. This will help keep you on

track. You can allow time for study – but also time for fun.
Remember to not over commit yourself – don’t forget school and
sport/music/other commitments. I have made a template on page
9 for you.

2) Don’t read your notes silently – read them out loud! If you feel
silly, go into a room by yourself to do it. You are 50% more
likely to remember it if you read it out loud.

3) Don’t get distracted on social media or games, boys! Hand your

phone or laptop over to your parents/guardians for a couple of
hours while you study.

4) Create mental associations. Link terms with other words you

know, or even better – make rhymes to try and remember things.

5) Watch a documentary on the topic! Documentaries are an

entertaining way of compacting an entire story into a short
timeframe.

6) Talk to someone else about what you have learnt – a parent, a

family member, a sibling, a friend, or me! If you can teach
someone else, then you definitely know it well!

7) Listen to the correct type of music – classical is best.

However, if that is not to your taste, just make sure the music
you choose does not have lyrics/words – this will confuse the
brain.

8
8) Walk before your exam – get your brain powering!

9) Take regular study breaks! When your brain is working, you

need to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb
more information, but also to keep you motivated and
focused when you are working. Take a short break after 45-50
minutes study as your focus and concentration will become
impaired after this period.

10) Get someone else to test you OR test yourself by making

flash cards. You can make great flash cards online – go to
GoConqur (a great site).

11) Lastly, don’t forget to talk to your teacher. I am here to

help you if you need extra study material or guidance of any
kind.

MAPPING & TIMELINES
MAP OF ANCIENT ROME

IMPORTANT FEATURES OF MAPS

It is important to use as many of the below as possible, when drawing a
map:

F FRAME (an outline around the map)

A ARROW (like a compass, showing North)

C COLOUR (use colour to make it vibrant)

K KEY (make sure the colours have a meaning)

T
x
TITLE (this shows what the map is of)

S
SCALE (this shows the size of the drawing compared to the
actual location)

TIMELINES:

13
When making a timeline, there are a few tips and tricks that you can use to
make them look tidier and ensure they are correct:

 Record the details on alternating sides of the date line, or at different

levels from the date line (as you can see to the right). This is a good
technique if you are running out of space.

 Remember that the order is the opposite to what we are used to when
we look at the BC/BCE timings. For example 100 BC was before 30 BC.

 Try to think logically about what would have come first. For example,
the wheel was obviously invented before the chariot.

 Timelines can be horizontal OR vertical

14
PRACTICE – MAPPING:

Draw a map of Ancient Rome:

Identify key natural and cultural features

15
PRACTICE – TIMELINES:

Complete a timeline of significant events from Roman history:

753 BC : rome founded

509 BC creation of roman republic

338: Settlement of the latin war

264-146 BC: punic wars

45: Julius Caesar becomes first dictator.

44 BC: Julius Caesar assassinated

80 AD: Colosseum built

380: Christianity becomes religion in rome

395 AD: rome splits into two empires

1453 AD - The Byzantine Empire comes to an end as

it falls to the Ottoman Empire.

16
CARTOON INTERPRETATION
A CARTOON IS A DRAWING THAT:
 Is about a person, people, or event
 Has a message or something that it wants you to think about
 May exaggerate or draw things in a larger than life way to grab your attention
 Should be easy to understand and read
HOW DO YOU INTERPRET WHAT THE CARTOON IS ABOUT?
Use this cartoon analysis checklist to help you:
 What visual symbols are used? - A visual symbol in a cartoon is any image
that stands for some other thing, event, person, etc. For example, a dollar sign
may stand for the entire economy. An octopus may stand for a powerful
corporation with “tentacles” controlling many other institutions.

 Have the images been exaggerated or distorted? - Changes or exaggerations

in size, shape, emotions or gestures often add extra meaning to the symbols the
cartoon includes. For example, a dragon is often used as a symbol for China. But a
huge, snorting dragon will make a different point about China from a tired,
limping, meek dragon.

17
 What words are used, and what is their meaning? – Names of people or
countries are often present, and the cartoon may have a title or slogan. It is
important to see if the cartoonist is being ironic with any statements they are
making. Irony is a form of humor in which something is said in a way that
undercuts or mocks what we think it means.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT PERSPECTIVES:
Perspectives are a set of beliefs held by
different people. It is their point of view.
(“I think that…”). Their point of view is
shaped by their values or beliefs.
Values in turn are often formed by
a perspective or set of ideas which are
often linked to their experiences and
upbringing – for example a particular
religious, cultural or political
perspective.
Remember everyone sees things differently!

18
PRACTICE - CARTOON INTERPRETATION:
Explain your understanding:
Everyone is on someones side and if
anyone does anything a whole war
will break out.

Explain your understanding:

EXTENDED PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE
HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE PARAGRAPH:
 You can think of constructing a paragraph like constructing a
hamburger. A paragraph that has a strong structure is easier
for the reader to understand like a well-structured burger is
easier to eat.
 Just like a top bun the first sentence provides structure. It tells
the reader the main point of the paragraph.
 The middle of your paragraph is made up of explanation and
evidence. These add substance to your point like the
ingredients in a hamburger add flavour.
 The last sentence – like the bottom bun - holds everything
together by summarising the argument you have made. You
want your ideas to be held together otherwise it will be messy.

21
The acronym PEEL can help you to structure an effective
paragraph. You should aim to make your point clear to the reader
and to use supporting with evidence.

P Lead tell the reader the main point

of your paragraph.

E Expand your point and explain the

main point in more detail.

E Use hard facts, examples and case

studies (evidence) to support your
explanation.

L Make it clear how your point

answers the question by
summarising your paragraph and
linking back to the question.

22
PRACTICE - PARAGRAPH WRITING:
Write a paragraph about Russian militarism in world war 1
P Russia was a militaristic country in world war 1.
E Russia, world war 1, was a militaristic country that mobilized
before the events of world war 1 broke out.
E They were preparing troops and weapons before ww1. Because
they were such a militaristic country Germany gave them an
ultimatum to stop mobilizing or else Germany would star their
own mobilization. Russia didn’t stop and this is a reason why war
broke out.
L Russia is a militaristic country because they were readying
soldiers and their armies as a whole before world war 1..
