8 So, with equal amount of volume, an object having the greater

9 mass will have the greater density. In the activity setup, take note

10 that the crusts are moving toward each other. The foams represent

11 different types of crust.

BIZ:
12 MSC UP FOR 10 SECS THEN FADE UNDER

BIZ:
16 MSC UP FOR 10 SECS THEN FADE UNDER
RT. DELFIN:
17 Alright, may I read your responses! Learner _____ was the first to

18 give the correct answer. He answered ___. You are correct! Foam

19 A is oceanic while foam B is continental. The dry foam which is

20 the foam B represents a continental crust while the wet foam

21 which is the foam A represents an oceanic crust. They are

22 converging. A continental crust curves upward on top of the

23 oceanic crust due to its lesser density. The oceanic crust, due to its

24 greater density, stays below. When an oceanic crust converges

25 with a continental crust, a crack between the crusts underwater,

-MORE-
PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS …555

called trench, is formed.

-MORE-
1 TR. DELFIN: Since the oceanic crust has greater mass due to the presence of

2 water on it, its density also is greater. This causes it to dive down

3 or subduct under the overriding plate, the continental plate.

4 Subduction is the process by which a plate dives under a less dense

5 plate. At the mantle, the leading edge of the subducting plate melts

6 or becomes fluid. It turns into a hot molten material which we call

BIZ:
7 magma.
RT. DELFIN:
8 MSC UP FOR 3 SECS THEN FADE UNDER

9 Due to the heat in the mantle, the magma builds up a pressure that

10 enables it to push the ground above it. The column of rising

11 magma is called a mantle plume. When there is volcanic activity

12 such as an eruption, the ground moves, and so an earthquake is

13 felt. Because subduction continues, a group of volcanoes, called

14 volcanic arc, is formed at the surface of the continental crust along

15 the boundary where the two crusts converged. The movement of

16 the ground may cause a disturbance in the ocean. The water may

17 flip or kick upwards to a few meters high. This is what we call

18 tsunamis, a Japanese term for harbor wave. This event is very

1 TR. DELFIN: Both foam A and foam B are oceanic crusts. Class, the

2 convergence of two oceanic crusts results in some similar events

3 compared to the first type of convergence. Tsunamis may be

4 formed. Earthquakes may happen. There is also subduction

5 because one plate is denser than the other. The front part of the

6 subducting plate becomes magma upon reaching the mantle. Then

7 it builds up pressure due to heat, pushes the crust above it, forming

8 a volcano. This is a continuous process. Since the plates are

9 moving, the volcano will move with the plate.

BIZ:
10 MSC UP FOR 3 SECS THEN FADE UNDER
RT. DELFIN:
11 It becomes extinct when it is no longer above the magma deposit

12 in the mantle. A new volcano will then be formed. This series of

13 volcanoes is called volcanic island arc since it is surrounded by

14 water. This explains why the Philippines is mostly loaded with

15 volcanoes. The different islands were believed to have originated

16 BIZ: from the convergence of two oceanic crusts.

15 They are both continental. Converging continental crusts or plates

16 result in a collision zone, which could cause shallow earthquakes.

17 At that place, a crack called fault is formed. This type of
