and traits ,that we inherit from our parents, and that
is what we are going to explain ,using science in
our discussion.

For today’s lesson, we are going to study about

View Slide 27 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation plus the
different genetic vocabulary words as your guide in
studying genetics.
So the first question is, What is Mendelian
View Slide 28 Genetics?
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 5
5 seconds
SECONDS AND UNDER
Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian monk who lived
in the late 19th century and, through studying peas,
View Slide 29 developed the basis for the science of Genetics still
used today.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

Genetics can be defined as the branch of biology

View Slide 30 that studies heredity. And basically, we’re doing
this, we’re looking at traits or characteristics that
are passed on from parents to offspring.

What is a Trait?
View Slide 31
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

A trait is a specific characteristic that is unique.

View Slide 32 Traits affect the way we look. It also affects how
our bodies function and Traits are inherited.

Examples are hair color, eye color, handedness,

etc.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
Where Do Traits Come From?
View Slide 33
7

Factors that make up an individual come from both

View Slide 34 parents.
The trait information is passed on from generation
to generation in the form of genes.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
When we look at an offspring like this baby monkey
View Slide 35 here, we see that it resembles to its parents. And
one of the reasons that an offspring resembles to
their parents is because parents pass on genetic
material to their offspring in the form of genes.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

So, let us expound what genes are?

View Slide 36
Genes are set of instructions that determine the
View Slide 37 traits of an organism.

Well a gene, is a sequence of DNA which is

View Slide 38 molecule packaged into thread-like structures
called chromosomes.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

A gene is a specific location on a chromosome that

View Slide 39 controls a certain trait.

BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3

3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
In humans, there are 46 chromosomes.
23 chromosomes from your mother and 23
View Slide 40 chromosomes from your father.

Where Do Genes Come From?

View Slide 41
• An individual needs 2 genes for each trait
View Slide 42 – one gene from each parent.

How Do Genes Get Their Information?

View Slide 43
A chromosome is a structure in the cell that
contains the genetic information.
View Slide 44 This information is passed on from one
generation to the next generation.
8

How Are Genes Expressed?

View Slide 45
Traits are how our genes show and since traits
View Slide 46 are formed from two genes, they are described
by the combination of genes that make the pair.

BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3

3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

What is a chromosome?
View Slide 47
A chromosome is a structure in the cell that
View Slide 48 contains the genetic information.
This information is passed on from one
generation to the next generation.
Each organism has a unique number of
chromosomes.

In humans, there are 46 chromosomes.

View Slide 49
23 chromosomes from your mother and 23
chromosomes from your father.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

So let’s take a look at a human chromosomes. In

View Slide 50 humans, we have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs.)
Each parent contributes one chromosome to each
pair so that offspring get half of their chromosomes
from their mother and half from their father.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
We will be looking at is a homologous pair.
View Slide 51 Homo is a prefix means the same and logos means
shape.

So, each chromosome in a homologous pair, look

very much the same. Each chromosome carries the
same sequence of genes controlling the same
inherited characteristics.
On Camera

BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3

3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
9

Now many traits have two alternating gene forms

View Slide 53 we call alleles.

So homologous chromosomes, can carry the same

allele or could carry a different one.

15 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 15

seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
Each trait has two alternate forms, and these
View Slide 54 flowers could inherit two purple alleles of two white
alleles, but in this case one purple and one white.
When we look at the alleles on how they work
View Slide 55 together, sometimes one allele actually masks the
expression of the other.
15 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 15
seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

The allele that covers the other is called the

View Slide 56 dominant allele.
While the covered allele, is called the recessive
allele.
So, let’s look at the trait for earlobes. This ear lobe
View Slide 57 is what we call the unattached and this earlobe is
called attached.
15 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 15
seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
Your earlobe type is controlled by two alternate
View Slide 58 forms of an allele.
The dominant allele code gives you the trait of
View Slide 59 unattached earlobes.
Whereas the recessive, the one that gets masked
or covered, would give you unattached earlobes.
So, depending upon which alleles you inherit you’ll
View Slide 60 either have unattached or unattached earlobes.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER

If you get both dominant alleles, one from your

View Slide 61 mother and one from your father, then you are
going to have unattached earlobes. You are pure
for that trait.
Sometimes you might get recessive alleles. One
View Slide 62 recessive allele from each parent. In which case
you don’t have any alleles that give you the
unattached earlobes and so that means, the only
thing you could be and have is the attached.
10

BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3

3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
So our physical appearance then is determined by
View Slide 64 our genes. The term used to describe physical
appearance that observable trait is called the
phenotype. The phenotype is the physical
description of an organism.
Genotype is an individual's collection of genes
View Slide 65
So when our parents passed on genes to us as
their offspring, these genes and alleles are helping
us to determine what are physical appearance will
be manifested in us.
Your physical appearance is determined by your
View Slide 66 genes.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
And for the big ideas for today’s lesson:
View Slide 68
Genetics is the study of heredity wherein heredity is
View Slide 69 defined as the passing on of traits from one
generation to the next.

Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian monk who lived

in the late 19th century and, through studying peas,
proposed and developed the basis for the science
of Genetics still used today.
There are two types of traits: the dominant and
View Slide 70 recessive.
Dominant trait is a trait that is always expressed, or
shown while recessive trait is a trait that is covered
up or seems to disappear.
BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3
3 seconds SECONDS AND UNDER
It’s time for a simple activity. For the instruction,
you will be answering 5 item questions. You will
On Camera
write your answer on your activity sheet. Are you
ready? That’s great!
