IV.PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing previous lesson or Let learners recall the previous lesson.

presenting the new lesson (ELICIT) Ask them to the processes of CENTRAL DOGMA. (3mins.)

Yes, that's right! The two processes of CENTRAL DOGMA are translation and transcription. Transcription is the process of
copying DNA sequence into RNA, while translation is the process of converting information in mRNA into a sequence of amino
acids in a protein.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson ACTIVITY 1: FIX ME! (5mins.)

(ENGAGE) Ask learners to fix the rumbled letters that will be displayed on TV screen, and they will be given 10 seconds to answer.
1. IONTMATU- MUTATION

2. ENEG IONTMATU- GENE MUTATON

3. SOMALCHROMO IONTMATU- CHROMOSOMAL MUTATION

4. TAGENSMU- MUTAGENS

5. NODOC- CODON

Very nice you have fixed all!

Why is understanding these genetic concepts vital?

Let's discover the answer to that question as we move on with our lesson. But before that, let me present the learning
objectives for this lesson.
At the end of the discussion, then you should be able to:
a. Define mutation
b. Translate codons using amino acid chart
c. Explain genetic mutation and the diseases it causes
d. Differentiate the two types of gene mutation and explain how mutations can cause changes in the structure of
protein. (S10LT-IIIe-38)

MATERIALS: PPT, Chalk, Chalkboard, SMART TV

C. Presenting examples/ instances of the The teacher will relate the motivational activity by letting the learners give and share their ideas about the activity by asking a
new lesson question/s.
(ENGAGE/EXPLORE)
Anyone from the class, who can give his/her idea/s about the lesson we will discuss today based on the words in first activity?

Very Good! Yes, it's about mutation!

Now, let's define the terms in Activity 1: FIX ME!

1. Mutation- are changes to a DNA sequence. Just like the information in DNA as a group of sentences, mutations are
mistakes in spelling of the words that form those sentences.
2. Genetic Mutation- A gene mutation involves an alteration in the nucleotide sequence of a specific gene.
3. Chromosomal Mutation- chromosomal mutation involves changes in the structure or number of chromosomes.
4. Mutagens- are agents that cause alteration in the DNA and can lead to permanent mutations in the DNA sequence
depending on the ability of an organism to repair the damage.
5. Codon- a sequence of three nucleotides which together form a unit of genetic code in a DNA or RNA molecule.

MATERIALS: PPT, Chalk, Chalkboard, SMART TV

D. Discussing new concepts and ACTIVITY 2: KAPALIT-PALIT BA AKO? (5 mins)

practicing new skill #1(EXPLORE)
Directions: Replace the blank using the letters in the alphabet. After replacing, read the sentence and give its context.
THE DOG BIT THE CA .
1. What did you observe?
2. What will happen to the meaning of the phrase if one letter word is replaced by other letters?
 Presentation of answers from the guide questions of the activity.
MATERIALS: PowerPoint Presentation
E. Developing Mastery (EXPLAIN) DISCUSSION (10 mins)

 What is mutation?
 What causes mutation?
 What are the two types of genetic mutation?
 What are the diseases caused by genetic mutation?
 What are the three types of point mutation?
 How mutation affects the structure of a protein?
MATERIALS: PowerPoint Presentation

F. Discussing new concepts and ACTIVITY 2: GENOMAZING CHALLENGE (15 mins)

practicing new skill #2 (EXPLORE)
1. Study the DNA strand.
DNA: ATG CCC GGC GAG
mRNA: UAC-GGG-CCG-CUC
tRNA: AUG-CCC-GGC-GAG

2. Using the amino acid chart, write the sequence of amino acids of #1

TYROSINE-GLYCINE-PROLINE-LEUCINE

3. Edit the DNA strand in #1 by changing the second bases of ATG to A. Then write the sequence of amino acids.
DNA: AAG CCC GGC GAG
mRNA: UUC-GGG-CCG-CUC

PHE-GLY-PRO-LEU

4. This time. Edit the DNA strand in #1 and write an additional A after ATG.
DNA: ATG ACC CGG CGA G
mRNA: UAC-UGG-GCC-GCU-C
tRNA: AUG-ACC-GCC-CGA-G
TYR-TRP-ALA-ALA
5. Edit the original DNA strand in #1 and replace the CCC with CCA
DNA: ATG CCA GGC GAG
mRNA: UAC-GGU-CCG-CUC
tRNA: AUG-CCA-GGC-GAG
TYR-GLY-PRO-LEU
6. Write your simple observation on the activity.

E. Developing Mastery (EXPLAIN) PRESENTATION OF OUTPUTS (5mins)

Have the learners recite their observation on the activity.
MATERIALS: PowerPoint Presentation/Chart (Tarpapel)

G. Finding practical applications of  Cite practical applications of Mutations in our daily life. (5 mins)
concepts and skills in daily living.
(ELABORATE)

Students must answer 10 questions. (5 mins)

PEN AND PAPER TEST (5minutes)

Direction: Identify what is being asked.
A. Identification

1. Is a change in the DNA sequence.

2. Agents that cause alteration of DNA
3-4. Translate the codon using the amino acid chart: AAG, UUC, GCU

B. Enumeration

6-7. Write the two types of gene mutations.

8-10. Write the three subtypes of point mutation.
