THE CELL
CYCLE

A Biology I Lesson
Prepared by: Khate Catherine B. Asuncion
LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY

VIDEO PRESENTATION
Cell cycle refers to the series of growth and

development steps a cell undergoes between its

“birth” – formation by the division of a mother cell

– and reproduction – division to make new

daughter cells.
Somatic cells on the path to cell division proceed

through a series of precisely timed and carefully

regulated stages of growth, DNA replication and

division that produces two genetically identical

cells.
CELL CYCLE
PHASES OF CELL
CYCLE
INTERPHASE
- the cell undergoes three distinct periods which are the

G1, S, and G2. In these three periods, the cell grows, DNA

replicated and the cell grows some more.

M PHASE
- cell division occurs and undergoes two distinct periods

called mitosis and cytokinesis which is the division of the

cytoplasm.
During Interphase, the cell will undergo normal growth

processes while also preparing for cell division. And it has

been divided into 3 substages which are the G1, S, and G2

phases.

Interphase - G1 Phase

The first stage of

interphase is called G1
phase (first gap). During

this phase, the cell is

metabolically active and

continues to grow

without replicating its

DNA.
Interphase - S Phase
DNA replication takes place

during the S Phase (Synthesis).

The cell synthesizes a complete

copy of the DNA in its nucleus.

It also duplicates a

microtubule-organizing

structure called the

centrosome. The centrosome

helps separate DNA during M

phase.

copies of
DNA

Interphase - G2 Phase

During the second gap phase,

or G phase, the cell grows more,

and makes proteins and

organelles, and begins to

reorganize its contents in

preparation for mitosis. It will end

when mitosis begins.
