1. Describe salon requirements for how you prepare your work area, your
client and yourself for a pedicure treatment. (f)

Work area: include all tools and equipment required, any hygiene requirements and ideal position for use

Hygiene requirements: Tools should be sterilised and or Sanitised before use, using autoclave, UV light or Disinfectants
Work area:
- Room temperature – the optimum working temperature is approx 18 ̊C.
- Adequate ventilation is required to keep fresh air circulating around the salon as filing and buffing nails creates dust
and some products have a strong odour.
- Working in a stuffy atmosphere can also cause lethargy and tiredness.
- Air conditioning is ideal as it can be controlled.
- Lighting – should be adequate to enable effective nail and skin diagnosis and treatment.
- Lighting should be carefully selected and positioned to prevent glare and discomfort for the client and therapist.
- Low noise level – clients may be given the option of listening to gentle background music.
- The work area is an important aspect of the treatment and the use of clean hygienic equipment and materials is
paramount.
- Clients will appreciate the extra time and consideration taken to ensure the treatment environment is just right for
them
Before commencing the treatment ensure thorough preparation of:
- Yourself
- Treatment area
- Nail products and equipment
- Client
- To prepare the treatment area and nail products/equipment.
- All environmental conditions must be prepared.
- Tools & equipment must be sterilised
- Paraffin wax at correct temperature and in a safe position
- Equipment, materials should be placed within easy reach.
- Clean towels / gown should be available for the client.

You will need to work in a position opposite your client, using a cushion or folded towels for the client to put their
foot on, over your lap. It is easier to work on a low chair, making sure your client has not got her leg up too high.

Client: include what items of clothing etc must be removed, suitable positioning of client for treatment etc

To prepare the client for treatment:

- Consultation to check for contra-indications


- Treatment plan to be discussed and agreed.
- Clients clothes to be protected
- Clients belongings to be stored safely and securely
- Position the client in a well supported chair to ensure their comfort throughout the treatment.
- Clients' jewellery should be removed and given to the client for safekeeping.

7. Describe how to select products, tools and equipment to suit clients needs,
skin and nail conditions. (j) (give examples)

Based on the client analysis we can offer them different products or services for example to moisturise
the skin or warm oil for splitter nails.
We will be demonstrating to the client how to improve their skin and nails throughout the pedicure
treatment by showing them how to file and buff their nails correctly, what products to use and how to
keep their skin moisturised and protected etc.

8. Explain how to communicate and behave in a professional manner towards


your client. (h) Include verbal and non-verbal communication and professional ethical conduct

we should always pay attention to our body language signs like:


- Eyes and gaze: the ability to look someone directly in the face and maintain eye
- contact shows openness and sincerity; looking away will almost always undermine your
message.
- Facial expression: smiling helps, but it should be genuine – do not smile if you are sad, angry or
serious.
- Hand and arm movements: avoid fiddling as this distracts attention from your message.
- Tone of voice: speak clearly and confidently in an even tone of voice.

9. Explain the importance of positioning yourself and your client correctly

Both you and your client should be in a healthy position at all times. Keep the neck straight and
glance down at your client without bending your neck. Feet should slide under the client’s bed
during the treatment. When more pressure is required, you may wish to move into a striding

lunge position (Just like therapist and client posture).
