Introduction

EngineeringExcelTemplates.com specializes in providing low-cost, easy-to-use

spreadsheets for calculations that are tedious to perform by hand but are not so
complicated as to justify the purchase of an entire standalone, general-purpose
program or to justify the time needed to learn how to use such a program. With
our spreadsheets, if you can type data into a spreadsheet cell, you can quickly
get the answer you seek—no need to study tutorials, examples, or Help screens.

Purpose of Sample Workbook

The sample Excel workbook that you are now looking at is meant to show you a
typical EngineeringExcelTemplates.com spreadsheet layout for pipe flow
calculations. This free sample spreadsheet calculates the head loss and pressure
drop , in either U.S. or S.I. Units, for user input values of flow rate, pipe diameter,
pipe length, pipe roughness, liquid density & viscosity, sum of minor loss
coefficients and Moody friction factor.
The full Pipe Flow Calculations workbook for incompressible laminar or turbulent flow
includes an iterative calculation of the Moody Friction Factor and it includes worksheets
for calculating pipe flow rate and pipe diameter in addition to one that calculates
frictional head loss and pressure drop.

Use and distribution

Besides trying out this sample spreadsheet yourself for your own applications,
feel free to distribute it to friends and colleagues. Show them the time and effort
they can save using a typical spreadsheet available from
EngineeringExcelTemplates.com.

This workbook is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or
implied.

Pipe Flow/Friction Factor Calculations I: (S.I. units)
Calculation of Head Loss and Frictional Pressure Drop for given flow rate,
pipe diameter, pipe length, pipe roughness, fluid density & viscosity, sum of

minor loss coefficients, and known value for Moody friction factor.

Instructions: Enter values in blue boxes. Spreadsheet calculates values in yellow boxes

1. User Inputs and Preliminary Calculations

Inputs (enter values in the blue boxes) Calculations (done by spreadsheet)

Pipe Diameter, Dmm = 150 mm Pipe Diameter, D = 0.1500 m

Pipe Roughness, e = 0.26 mm Cross-Sect. Area, A = 0.0177 m2

Pipe Length, L = 700 m Ave. Velocity, V = 2.44 m/s

Pipe Flow Rate, Q = 0.04310 m3/s Reynolds number, Re = 281,419

Fluid Density, r = 1000 kg/m3

Fluid Viscosity, m = 0.0013 N-s/m2 Friction Factor, f = 0.023

2. Calculate hL and DPf, using the known value for f from above
Equations: hL = [f(L/D) + SK](V2/2g) and DPf = rghL

Sum of minor loss coefficients, SK = 6 (set SK = 0 to calculate straight pipe losses)

Frictional Head Loss, hL = 34.36 m

Frictional Pressure
Drop, DPf = 337083 N/m2

Frictional Pressure
Drop, DPf = 337.1 kN/m2
