LIBRARY MASHUP | REMIX 1 – AUDIO

Name: Alice Murphey

Remix Title: Nostalgia: Laughter and A Journey into the Past

Intended audience: The intended audience for this remix is anyone who wishes to
reminisce about their past experiences and memories, particularly ones that evoke
joyful emotions. My remix would probably most resonate with young adults and
older, given its themes of childhood joy and nostalgia.

Materials and where I found them: I used a song, Answered in an Echo, and a
school bell audio from YouTube.

Software/Tools: I used the Citizen DJ Database, the Internet Archive, and my

personal audio archive (old childhood videos) for my remix. I used two tools,
YTMP3 and Cloud Convert, to convert my audios into a useable form. Lastly, to edit
my audio remix, I used Audacity.

Creative Commons: After doing the quiz on the website, I determined that I am
attaching the following Creative Commons license to my work: CC0 1.0 Universal.

Course readings, discussions, viewings, etc.: Course readings and discussions

about fair use and the legalities associated with copyright, specifically the reading
by Patricia Aufderheide, influenced my work because they helped me determine the
extent to which I can claim fair use without legal repercussions. Since I don’t plan to
officially share this audio remix, besides with the class, the purpose was strictly
educational, and I should be able to use the audio content without proper copyright
permissions. The Remix Manifesto also influenced my audio remix by pushing me to
think about remixes as creative outlets. Since it brought up many points about
copyright law limiting creative freedom, I tried to be as creative as possible with my
audio remix.

Rhetorical techniques: I used a lot of repetition in my audio remix because I

thought it helped to emphasize my focus on the joy and playfulness of childhood.
One of the things I repeated was “teeter-totter,” something kids will say repeatedly
on a seesaw.

Artist/scholar’s statement: My remix is a nostalgic journey through the playful

and joyful moments of our lives, focusing on our younger selves and emphasizing
the childish wonder that lives inside of most of us. I combined my personal archive
with resources from the Citizen DJ Database in the Library of Congress and other
sources to create an immersive experience that takes the audience back to feelings
of laughter, games, and childhood innocence.

What the audience should feel, think, or do: I want to evoke a sense of nostalgia
that prompts my audience to reflect on their joyful memories of childhood. I hope
that they’ll think about the value of playfulness and laughter and how those
elements can bring us back to youth even as we venture farther into adulthood. I
want people to feel happiness from reminiscing about cherished moments, but it’s
okay to feel sad, given that looking back can often be a bittersweet experience.
Lastly, I hope that my remix will encourage people to celebrate their own memories
and appreciate the power of laughter to connect us with our inner child.

EXTRA

Significance of background song: The background song, called “Answered in an

Echo,” of my audio remix is part of a song that was used in a dance piece I competed
in when I was 14, around the same time I first began learning my first AV skills.
There’s irony in this because the competition dance song was a mashup of
“Answered in an Echo” and another song called “First Crop. It’s ironic because I’m
now using a piece of that remix in my remix.

Audios used: 3 audios from my personal archive, 2 audios from YouTube, 3 audios
from Citizen DJ, and 1 audio from the Internet Archive
