Activity1: The value of music (Individual) 5%
1. Write your reaction to this statement: In a world which compels men’s minds to invent
machines of destruction, the arts must remind it of the beneficence of beauty and the
worth of the individual (Benn, 1958)
ANSWER:
Art must benefit and satisfy man - man make use of art in practical life through
artistic principles, taste and skills. ... art is expressed through a certain medium or
material by which artist communicate himself to his fellows:
2. What is your earliest memory of music? What is your earliest memory of music in
school? Were these positive experiences? Why or why not?
ANSWER:
My earliest was when I was 5 or 6 years old, squished in amongst the High School
youth group that my father led in our living room (he was an associate pastor at a
Presbyterian church in Chicago). This was in the easy 70s when Christian folk songs
like Pass It On and others from the musical Godspell were beginning to make their way
into homes around the country. I can distinctly remember the vibration—of being
surrounded by love, hearts that were open, and the simple experience of joy.
ANSWER:
Music is one of the most important and powerful things in my life. My life without
melodies and harmonies would be completely empty. Listening to and playing
different songs helps me to UN-stress, relax, and it can also help to motivate me during
frustrating times. I love listening to music while on my regular morning routine, because
it helps me to prepare for the coming day. I think it is like the memoir to my life, as it has
been there throughout every detail. When I was younger, I always had a great love for
music. I mainly listened to whatever was playing in the ground or what my parents were
listening to.
4. What are your greatest fears about planning music experience for children? How do
you plan to overcome these fears?
Answer:
Stage fright causes children to suffer in silent terror. Most of them don’t
discuss their fear with others, not even with their parents and siblings. If not
helped at this juncture, stage fright is going to affect the life of the child in
different, harmful ways.
Believe it or not, but music also has the ability to save the lives of people.
People who suffer from depression can find comfort in listening to the singers,
songs or bands. I am sure everyone, including myself must have experienced
something like this at one given time or the other. I really believe that music
has the ability to change or influence a person’s mood or mind. It is a
universal language and helps in uniting people. In fact, if I were to talk about it
from my personal experience, I would say that I share a deep connection with
music and the connection became deeper when I went to attend one festival
in France known as “Saint Chartier”. People from across the globe go there
every year to play music, sing and dance with each other.
Music is in my blood and I firmly believe that it has great therapeutic ability.
This is all I have to say!
