Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Survival Mode

Objectives: Students will be able to explain how offspring learn survival techniques from their
mothers.

Students will be able to differentiate survival techniques between different types of animals.

State Standards:
1-LS1-2. Obtain information from multiple sources to determine patterns in parent and offspring
behavior that help offspring survive.

Context: This lesson is for first grade science students. I am teaching this lesson so that students
can understand how behavior is learned in the wild. Before this lesson students learned about the
different kingdoms of animals. They were also taught about omnivores, herbivores and
carnivores. Students will be bringing prior knowledge of animal kingdoms and maybe even have
an idea of some a specific animal’s behavior. After this lesson students will be learning how
animals adapt to their environment to survive. To prepare students for the next lesson I am
teaching them about how behavior is passed down from mother to offspring. This may include
some adaptations to survive.

Data: Students will be grouped based on a prior knowledge question. I want the groups to be
mixed with students who are knowledgeable about the topic and those who have a lot to learn.
This way students who have prior knowledge can teach their peers. The data used to create the
groups was a prior knowledge question. The activating prior knowledge question was based on
the 1-LS1-2 standards. And how offspring mimic the behavior of their parents to create survival
skills. In this lesson data will be collected by answering a google form document at the end of
class.

Procedures:
Introduction (10): Students will enter their classrooms and put their things in their
lockers. Once they sit down, I will ask them if they remember answering the prior knowledge
question before class ended yesterday to get the brain working. This question was “Think of
your favorite animal, what are some behaviors it has”? I will then ask for the answer to the
prior knowledge question. I will call on 4-6 students to get the class familiar with different types
of animal behaviors. I will introduce the title of the lesson “survival mode” and explain the
rough layout of today’s class. Then I will break students off into groups

Teacher Directed (10 minutes): In this group, students will be using white boards and
expo markers. I will be asking students what they do to survive what they learned from their
parents. The series of questions will include How do you prevent your teeth from rotting? How
do you stay warm? How do you get nutrients? How do we stay hydrated? And how do we stay
healthy in general? When students have an answer think of their answer to the question, they
can write it down on the white board. Each student will be able to participate in every question.
Then I will ask students if they have any pets and if they notice anything that their pet does to
survive. Once they give their answers we will discuss as a group how some of these tactics may
overlap to animals who live in the wild.

Collaborative (10 minutes): In this section, there will be pictures of animals placed on a
table. There will then be cut-up survival tactics scattered across the table. Students will have to
collaborate with their group to match the offspring’s survival strategies with the correct mother
animal at the top. There will be four animals and each animal has three corresponding survival
tactics. They can then check their work by flipping over the animals at the top to find their
correct survival tactics listed. They will then randomize the cut-up pieces of survival mode for
the next group.

Independent Digital (10 minutes): In this section, students will grab a Chrome book and sit on
the floor. They will watch this video linked in Google Classroom about survival tactics for
specific groups of animals. (Fish, mammal’s, amphibians, Reptiles).
https://youtu.be/p0HDEXjOvt4?si=kOLacrk9mbPCYmZM
There will be a few questions on a worksheet to check for basic understanding of the
video. The sheet will ask students to name at least one survival per animal talked about in the
short video. Students will then use the rest of the time to look up an animal of their choice and
find some the tactics they use to survive in the wild.

Closure (10 minutes): I will then direct students to put away all activities and make
their way back to their desks. Students will be able to reflect on what they learned by
responding to a Google form. Students must choose one animal and a survival tactic they use to
survive. At the bottom of the form there will be a section asking if students have any additional
questions. I will look at those and then address the questions after the students come back
from lunch.

Rationale:
YouTube video
This tool is interactive and provides the student with an opportunity to see the lesson come full
circle. The short video allows for the content of the lesson plan to be reviewed by the student.
The video provides examples of different animal groups and survival tactics they use. For
example mammals, amphibians, fish and reptiles. I know this piece of multimedia is of high
quality because YouTube is a vastly used tool for multiple purposes. This technology can
support all learners because students have the ability to play the video more than once if they
need to review the content. They can also adjust the speed of the video. This video reviews the
standards of 1-LS1-2.
Google Forms
This tool is interactive and provides students with the ability to test their knowledge. The google
form will contain five questions about the lesson, it will be a combination of short answer and
multiple-choice questions. This tool is of high quality because students can review their answers
to the questions after submitting the quiz. Students will know instantly what they missed and
won’t have to wait for the teacher to grade it. Teachers will be able to see the students answers
and can go over any questions that were constantly missed. This piece of multimedia can reach
all learners because students who may have a visual disability can zoom in on the screen unlike a
quiz on paper. Students also have the ability to take the quiz home if they need more time to
work on it. This way it reaches students who may have a 504 plan.

Google Classroom
This tool is a good piece of multimedia for students to use. For this lesson google classroom is
only briefly used to provide the link to the YouTube video. It supports the objective of this
lesson because it provides a hyper link to the YouTube video on different types of animal
behaviors/ survival tactics. I know this site is of high quality because it is ranked #3 under
educational apps on iTunes. This site is differentiated for all students because students have the
entire class layout in front of them. At any time, students can look back and review content. This
piece of multimedia can also provide students extended time on assignments they may not finish
in class.
