Formal Classroom Observation #: 3

Pre-Conference (Planning Conference) Questions

Teacher Candidate: Siera Camacho School: Lincoln Elementary School Date: October 4th, 2022

Questions for preparation and discussion:

1. To which part of your curriculum does this lesson relate?

This lesson relates to their science curriculum.

2. How does this learning fit in the sequence of learning for this class?
Habitats fit into the sequence of learning because they have just finished talking about life cycles. Habitats are where animals
live, and next the students will be talking about adaptations. Adaptations are features that animals use to survive and live
within their habitat.

3. Briefly describe the students in this class, including those with special needs.
My class is very good, however, they are very talkative. There are no students with IEP’s, but we have students that receive
services for reading interventions, speech and language, as well as SEL. One student is very disruptive and will defy
instructions. Several student needs constant reminders in order to complete assignments. One student needs to be close to the
board in order to see. Many of the students need constant reassurance to know that they are doing it correctly.

4. What are your learning outcomes for this lesson? What do you want the students to know or be able to do?
The learning outcome for this lesson is that the students will be able to correctly explain a habitat for a specific animal. I want
the students to know what a habitat is, as well as the ability to explain what a habitat is for specific animals. I will know this
because they will be able to explain the habitat of the animal they are given when they are sharing at the end of the lesson.

5. How will you engage the students in the learning? What will you do? What will the students do? Will the students work in
groups, or individually, or as a large group? Provide any worksheets or other materials the students will be using.
We are beginning the lesson with the vocabulary word, habitat, we will then watch a video that will help the students be
engaged. The students will be responsible for listening the video and then brainstorming, collaborating with their peers,
coloring, and then sharing their animals’ habitat in their group. I will play the video, give the students their animals and
directions. I will also facilitate their ‘group presentations’.
Independently:
- The students will be drawing their habitats individually.
Small Group:
- The students will discuss their habitats in small groups, as well as sharing at the end what they all drew.
Whole Group:
- We will watch the video together as a whole group. The students will also share out to the whole group. I will also give
students directions as a whole group.

6. How will you differentiate instruction for either individual students or groups of students in the class?
For the group of students, I was sure to mention that I would repeat instructions and directions. I also will give pictures of the
animals so that the students do not have to think about the animal or try to imagine it, they will have a concrete image in their
hand. I also know that some of my students are shy, so I was sure to make the presentation be done in groups. I also have the
students brainstorm by themselves and then with their group so that they can check their answers before they begin drawing.

7. How and when will you know whether the students have learned what you intend?
At the end of the lesson the students will share their animal habitats to the whole class, I will know that they learned what I
intended if they have the correct habitat for their animal. We will also talk about what they learned at the end of the lesson, so
when we do that I will know what they learned throughout the lesson.

8. What would you like me to observe specifically during the lesson?

Once again, I think that classroom management is something that I need to be observed on. I have been improving but it is
something that I would like to continue to receive advice and comments on.
