Interesting Facts:
● Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish and/or are
descended from Spanish-speaking populations, while
Latino refers to people who are from or descend from Latin
America.

Science: Carlos Juan Finlay
● Cuban epidemiologist who
discovered that yellow fever is
transmitted from infected to
healthy humans by a mosquito.
○ His ideas were ignored for
20 years.
● From 1902-1909, he was the
Health Officer in Cuba.
Education: Jamie Escalante
● Born in Bolivia and came to the US
in the 1960s to seek out a better
life.
● A math teacher who worked with
students in troubled areas.
● Received awards for all his hard
work and dedication to helping
students learn.

Medicine: Dr. Helen Rodriguez Trias
● She wanted to be a physician because
medicine combined the things she loved
the most - people and science.
● Helped to improve access to public health
services for women and children in both
the United States and Puerto Rico.
● First Hispanic President of the American
Health Association.
Military: Ramon Viera
● Fought in:
○ World War II (1939-1945)- He
served from 1945 to 1946
○ Korean War (1950-1953)- He
served from 1950 to 1956
● Saved a 4-year old child after
mother was injured by a bomb.

The Arts: Frida Kahlo

● Born in Mexico City, Mexico.


● 20th century Feminist painters.
● Most of her painting are self-portraits.
● She employed a folk art style to

postcolonialism, gender, class, and
race in Mexican society.
Literature: Miguel De Cervantes

● Spanish Writer who wrote Don


Quixote in two parts 1605 and
1615.
● Don Quixote has been
translated into more than 60
languages.
● This book became the world’s
first best seller.

Politics: Cesar Chavez

● Born in Arizona but moved back and


forth between California.
○ Attended over 36 schools.
● He father worked on a 100 acre farm
and owned a store.
○ He saw injustices at a young age
and wanted to make a difference.

Issues
● Many students, particularly ELL students are misdiagnosed
or overdiagnosed for Special Education services.
● Students tend to fall behind their peers in school
academically.
● “With respect to college completion, only 11% of Latinos 25
to 29 years of age had a BA or higher

compared to 34% of Whites.” (NEA)


Drop Out Rate
According to the US Department of Education the Hispanic
dropout rate decreased from 27.8 to 8.6 percent between
2000 and 2006.
