“Grandma is coming for a visit,” Dad said. “Let’s make something special to eat.”
“I know just what we should make,” said Sophia. “Grandma gave us a recipe for her
delicious white bean soup. Let’s surprise her with that.” Marcos said that soup was
his favorite, and Dad agreed that the bean soup was a great idea. Dad found the
recipe and said, “We need to start with two cups of beans. That doesn’t sound like
very much. It must mean two cups for each person. If we want to make soup for
four people, then how many cups of beans will we need? ” “Eight!” Sophia and Marcos
shouted at the same time. They both loved to solve math problems. Dad laughed.
Then they figured out how many tomatoes, carrots, and cups of water they would
need for four servings. Dad, Sophia, and Marcos took turns adding the items to the
soup pot. Sophia said, “I think we’re going to need a bigger pot!” Dad found a bigger
pot. “This is a lot of soup,” he said. Dad read the recipe again. At the bottom of the
page, Grandma had written that the recipe made enough for four servings. Dad
had not seen that the first time he read the recipe. He explained what had
happened to Sophia and Marcos. “What is four times four?” he asked. “Sixteen!”
they both answered. “So we have enough soup for sixteen people,” Dad said.
Sophia knew just what to do. When Grandma rang the doorbell, all their neighbors
were waiting in the backyard to visit with Grandma, too!
