WHAT IS BULIMIA
• People with this disorder have a fear of fatness
• Episodes of binge eating followed by an abuse of
laxatives/diuretics, induced vomiting
• Can be life threatening
• People usually have a normal weight
PREVALENCE
• Young woman
Starts late teens to early 20s
OBSERVABLE SIGNS/ SYMPTOMS
• Frequent bathroom visits • Muscle weakness
• Excessive exercising • Bloodshot eyes
• Low self esteem • Scars scrapes or calluses on knuckles
• Withdrawing socially from
friends/family
• Swollen cheeks or jawline
• Fainting
DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA
• Binge eating episode taking place during a discrete period
• Amount of food must be clearly larger than what someone would
usually eat in that time or context
• Feeling of not having self control overwhelming guilt
• Eating rapidly
• Eating alone
