What is an eating disorder?

• An eating disorder is an illness in which people


experience severe disturbances in their eating
behaviors and related thoughts and emotions.

• Most common types:

- Anorexia

- Bulimia
Bulimia Nervosa

• Bulimia is a psychological eating


disorder in which you have episodes of
binge eating.

• Afterward you try to lose weight by:

- Starving yourself

- Vomiting

- Fasting

- Compulsive exercising
What causes bulimia?

• Dissatisfaction with your body

• Low self-esteem

• Anxiety disorders

• Stress

• Traumatic events

• Frequent dieting
Bulimia symptoms

Physical symptoms:
- Dental problems.
- Sore throat.
- Weakness, exhaustion.
- Dizziness or fainting.
- Sleep problems.
- Dry skin.
- Gaining and loosing weight often.
- Irregular periods.
Bulimia symptoms

Behavioural symptoms:
- Feeling out of control.
- Eating uncontrollably and then vomiting.
- Skipping meals.
- Excessive exercising.
- Often using mints, gum, or mouthwash.
- Mood swings.
- Avoiding friends and activities you used
to enjoy.
- Drinking large amounts of water.
Bulimia treatment

• Medical treatment:
- Medications.
- Hospitalization.

• Psychological treatment:
- Cognitive behavioural therapy.
- Interpersonal treatment.
- Family based treatment.
Self – care for bulimia

• Look after your body.

• Connect with others.

• Avoid your triggers.
