Management

GEACM01X | ADVANCE COMMUNICATION

What is Image?

Image is the physical

representation of who you are and
what you are all about—your
attitudes, appearance, and
actions. Image is all that an
individual projects consciously or
unconsciously—the way you look,
care for, and carry yourself, your
personal style, poise, and
presence. It’s part of who you are.

Sub-Topic Title Here
What is Image Management?

It is a process which is simultaneously occurring

through which you have an awareness about
yourself and have complete grasp of the impacts
of your appearance to yourself, your goals and
to others.

In easier words, image management is the ability to

project who you are to others and your
recognition of your real identity and personality.

What is self-image?

According to Mountain State Centers for Independent Living

(2018)

“Self-image is how you perceive yourself. It is a number

of self- impressions that have built up over time… These
self-images can be very positive, giving a person confidence
in their thoughts and actions, or negative, making a person
doubtful of their capabilities and ideas.”

Self-Image in Comparison With…

• Self-Image vs. Self-Concept

• Self-Image vs. Self-Esteem
• Self-Image vs. Identity

GEACM01X | ADVANCE COMMUNICATION

Self-image VS Self-Concept

Ackerman (2018) gave distinction between self-image

and self-concept. At first glance, they seem to be
similar. However, they are not quite the same. Self-
concept is a more overarching construct than self-
image; it involves how you see yourself, how you think
about yourself, and how you feel about yourself. In a
sense, self-image is one of the components that make
up self-concept (McLeod, 2008).

GEACM01X | ADVANCE COMMUNICATION

Self-image VS Self-Esteem

On this part, self-image has a huge involvement with self-esteem. What

we feel is mostly due to how we perceive ourselves of who we really
are. Self-esteem goes deeper than self-image. Self-esteem is the totality
of respect that we have for ourselves, and it includes what we feel
towards ourselves.

Surely, having a negative self-image can influence self-esteem, and

having poor self-esteem would be accompanied by negative self-image,
but they are at least somewhat independent “self” aspects (Ackerman,
2018).

GEACM01X | ADVANCE COMMUNICATION
Self-image VS Identity
Identity is a concept closely related to self-image but larger and more
comprehensive than self-image. When we say identity, it is the totality
of the idea of who we are. As mentioned by Baumeister (1997):
“The term ‘identity’ refers to the definitions that are created for
and superimposed on the self.”

In other words, identity is the complete perception that we have in

ourselves, and how we manifest ourselves to others while self-image
is only a part of the complete perception (Ackerman, 2018).

The Elements of Self-Image (Oltmann, 2014)

1. The way a person perceives or thinks of

him/herself.
2. The way a person interprets others’ perceptions (or
what he thinks others think) of him/herself.
3. The way a person would like to be (his ideal self).

Correspondence
What is Employment
Correspondence?
A sequence of written communication is
usually necessary during the job search
campaign. This vital exchange between
applicant and employer is expected by both.
A positive response from an employer usually
prompts a detailed series of letters and other
paperwork. Proper documentation leaves little
room for surprise. Although correspondence is
a time-consuming, business etiquette
demand it if you’re serious about making a
favorable impression.

GEACM01X | ADVANCE COMMUNICATION

CORRESPONDENCE GUIDELINES
1. Write to a specific individual in a decision-making role rather than title.
2. Use a positive, enthusiastic, tone.
3. Develop 3-5 paragraph letters with 3-5 short sentences in each.
4. Type letters on a word processing program.
5. Avoid flowery words, phrases, extraneous words, and clichés.
6. Use white, light gray or beige high-quality bond stationery with
matching envelopes.
7. Employers are usually impressed with self-confidence; a signature with
a blue felt-tip pen seems to indicate this trait.
8. Always keep a copy of every letter sent for future reference.
9. When initially mailing to a chief executive, mark “private” or
“confidential” on the envelope and
omit your Gname
E A C M 0 1 X and

N C E C O M Maddress
U N I C A T I O N on the envelope.
