 Bubble Pavilion is an
interesting example of new
timber-based architecture

The “Bubble Pavilion” is an experimental pavilion of ephemeral architecture,

resulting from geometric, structural and construction research.

The Higher Technical School

of Construction Engineering
at the University of Seville
launched an ambitious project
to build an experimental
pavilion - the “Bubble Pavilion”
- using plywood panels as the
raw material. The project stems
from a geometric, structural,
and construction research
project undertaken by Roberto
Narváez, a professor and
researcher at the University
of Seville, and his team of
professors and students.

The project aimed to conduct practical research into new
approaches to architectural design using computational or
parametric design tools. Based on the geometric relationships
found in spherical soap bubbles of equal radius, a geometric
algorithm is designed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper to
adapt the natural arrangement of bubble clusters to any free-
form surface. Subsequently, another algorithm is designed in
Grasshopper to materialize the structure using laminated wood
panels and digital fabrication tools.

Timber - more specifically, plywood panels provided by Garnica

- was used as the raw material to build the structure. According
to the project designer, “its sustainability, strength, aesthetics,
and the ease with which it can be machined, make timber one
of the materials that will play an extremely important role in
the new methods of construction which will proliferate in years
to come. This will be accompanied by the emergence of new
structural and non-structural systems, adapted to organic
and customized geometries that are worlds apart from the
conventional constructions we see today”.

The team behind the Bubble Pavilion project collaborated with

Maderas Cilpe, a company based in Marchena (Seville, Andalusia)
that specializes in timber products, and Garnica, who provided
the plywood panels used in the construction.

The project was carried out by a group of students and professors

led by Roberto Narváez. CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs

Shape Diver interviewed Sybren de Graaf, CEO and founder of Sfered. He

created an innovative solution for the eyewear industry using Grasshopper
and ShapeDiver’s infrastructure. With a background in architecture, Sybren
discovered the potential of Grasshopper and used his design knowledge to
create a revolutionary online service for opticians. Sfered’s service allows
for the customization of frames using a 3D parametric model placed on
the client’s scanned face. The result is a personalized and comfortable fit
unique to each individual.

Sybren de Graaf was born in 1977 in Surinam
and moved to the Netherlands when he was
five. In 2006, he graduated from TU Delft and
started working as an architect and inventor in
Amsterdam.
For years he has been working as an architect
on tools to support his design trajectories and
explore new fields in architecture and design.
This has evolved into craftsmanship, where
algorithms, design, and making come together
in realized buildings and objects.
Then, in search of his own self-made spectacle
frame, he started the development of custom-fit
frames on a whole new level that didn’t exist yet.

In 2009 he discovered
Grashopper as a then-new
upcoming tool to combine
design and programming
without coding knowledge to
create objects and architectural
models with his 3D printer.
He saw it as the link between
the design process and
reality. Constant alterations of
drawings and prototypes are

tedious, and implementing

programming in the drawing
process makes it much more
integrated.

He slowly understood the

level of complexity of design
and eyewear was closely
related to architecture, and
computational design was a
perfect way of both learning
the trade and not needing to
redo all the work continuously.
