FORMULATION OF REGULAR HUMIDIFIER USING BAMBOO SCENT FRAGRANCE OIL

Customer: SMART CITY

Proposed Packaged: Proposed package of 1 gallon plastic white container approximately 3.25L
Intended: Humidifier fragrance wherein the proposed product is added to a regular humidifier
machine (as directed by the machine to the mark) of no water.

Theoretical Discussion:
(Please refer to Marriott formulation regular humidifier study)
Bamboo Scent oil is a highly molecular weight scent oil range from C 16 – C24
Organic alkyl-phenyl compounds with oxygen bounded molecule.

Addition or more concentration of dipropylene glycol is enhanced at this

point for greater London forces. However, increasing the concentration further has
off effect.
1. Hydrogen bonding with water molecules of dypropylene glycol is lessened as the alkyl
group will increase hence, it will be Most likely the water solubility to decrease
dramatically as what is intended for.
2. Scent diffusion will be less as the London forces dominates
therefore addition of DPG is recommended but it has a limit.
The limit and the problem is remedied by the addition of polysorbate. The polysorbate is
a polymer able to attract the bamboo scent intermolecularly giving the DPG to have effective
hydrogen bonding with water.

The addition of concentration of poly sorbate is optimized in this type of problem.

Scope and Limitation:

1. To prepare a 500 ml sample of regular humidifier but of the use of bamboo scent oil (as
requested by the customer). The product/sample should not be used for other purposes.
The 500 ml is placed on ambered/regular or plastic transparency with spray cap
assembly.
2. The sample must be water soluble (as per required by the customer)
3. Placed on a typical humidifier machine as its direction applicability.

Objectives:
1. To prepare a 500 ml sample of regular humidifier of bamboo scent oil.
2. A water-soluble type.
3. A feasible packing as stipulated.
4. A repeated formulation Quality is integrated as well.
5. A feasible way for mass production.
6. Product cost optimization.
Experiment Methodology:
Formulation:
Bamboo Scent: 1.50%
Dipropylene Glycol: 4.00%
Polysorbate: 1.00%
Sodium Benzoate: 0.10%
Water (Purified): 93.40%

Procedure:
Note: The method is preparing a 500ml sample. The amount involved follows the above
formulation.

Procedure:
1. Premix A
1.1 In a container containing 7.50ml of bamboo scent oil add 20ml of dypropylene
glycol dropwise and stirring until clear.
1.2 Add 5ml of polysorbate (Tween 80) dropwise and stir until clear.
1.3 Let it stand for 5 minutes to be stable.
2. Premix B
2.1 In a container containing 467 ml of water add 0.5g of sodium benzoate and stir
until clear. Let it stand for 5 minutes.
3. Add the Premix A to B in small amounts
3.1 Stir continuously upon adding .
3.2 It is expected to be in white turbid.
3.3 Stir vigorously so that turbidity is lessened greatly.
4. Place the resulting solution in a 500 ml Plastic Bottle (ambered or white colored with
Cap).
5. Keep away from direct light and cured for 1 day.
Testing and results:
1. Physical Results:
Viscosity: Freely flowing
Odor: Very good bamboo scent
Color: White
Appearance: Fine colloidal suspension
Tyndall effect: Good with very fine colloidal suspension

2. Solubility:
On a spot plate 20 ml of water and added 1ml of sample
- High solubility was noted.
3. Residual
Five drops of sample were placed in a spot plate and exposed for 2hrs.
- No residues were noted.

Findings:
After 1 day of curing
1. The general appearance is good. No oil separation layer seen. The mixture is
very defined stable and fine colloidal suspension colored white and very
slight turbidity.
2. Stable water solubility and no residues.
3. Fine colloidal mixture.
4. Solubility in water is good and form stable colloidal suspension
5. No residues were present. Hence safe for humidifier machine and its
Filter.

Conclusion:
1. The formulation is good and send to the customer.
2. Cost is very promising
3. Yield is 98% after the final volume of mixture is 490 ml 15ml

Recommendation:
1. The sample is submitted to the customer
2. A good packaging should be finalized
3. Further study:
1.Physico-Chemical properties of the sample product
2.Evalation for formulation optimization
3.Mass production and its related ergonomics.
