other and mentioned what is the best technique for a
particular task.
 Provide an appropriate conclusion to your discussion where
you make recommendations about the best use of each
technique.
14 Background Information

 Comms Assignment 3 and Drawing Assignment 2 are all about

searching information and identifying reference sources
 References sources generally take the form of:
 Books

 Magazines

 Journals

 Internet Sources

 Meeting Minutes, etc.

15 Why Use References?

 Referencing the original source of the information avoids being

accused of plagiarism (Definition: The act of passing off
someone else’s work as your own)
 The use of references:
 Adds strength or weight to the statements that you make.

 Shows that your comments are backed up by other “experts” in

the field.

 Demonstrates that you have thoroughly researched the topic.

16 Referencing in Assignments

 References have two parts:

 Citation – place in the text where the reference has been used, e.g.,
Sudlow (2022).

 Bibliography – which provides information so that someone else can

locate the reference, e.g., Sudlow, C.A., 2022, DC Drawing Standards
2022, Class Notes, Derby College.

 For the Comms / Drawing assignments, it is acceptable to include a

URL for each source at the bottom of your answer to each task.
 However, you may want to try including practicing in-text citations as
it is expected at L4 and above
Referencing 1
Terminology

Citation Reference List

You make a short reference You make a list at the end of
(author’s last name and year your essay of all the sources you
of publication) in the text of have referred to in you work –
your assignment every time you give complete details here
you refer to someone else’s including publisher, etc.
work.

The citation acts as a key so

that your reader can find the
full reference easily on the list of
references at the end of your
essay.
Referencing 2
Quotations

When you quote, you use the exact words of the author(s) and you put

them in quotation marks ‘…’. You must include the author’s last name, the

year of publication and the page number.

When should you quote?

 When you are using someone’s definition
 When you want to discuss exactly what someone said
 When the precise detail of what someone says is important (e.g., a law, policy
document)
 When someone has phrased something effectively and succinctly
Referencing 3
Paraphrasing
You paraphrase when you change the information read into your own words without
changing the original meaning.

Why paraphrase?
 It shows that you understand what the writer is saying
 It makes it easier to build you own argument. For example, you can use what someone
else says as evidence or an example to support what you want to say
 It fits more easily with your own writing style

Example:
Original quote: ‘Employers who provide childcare at the workplace have found that lateness
declines and levels of stress decrease’ (Smith, 2012, p. 5).
Paraphrased sentence: There is evidence to suggest that on-site day care is beneficial to
employers since employees tend to be more punctual and appear to suffer less from stress
(Smith, 2012).
20 Effective use of Pictures in Assignments

 Pictures, tables, graphs, etc. should have a caption and title

 All pictures used should be referred to within the text

 If it is not your picture, you must reference the information source

Example Figure 1: An Example of a Render Image in Inventor

Studio (Autodesk, 2023)
Figure 1 shows….

As can be seen in Figure 1 ….

21 Comms Assignment 3

f. “Kirchhoff’s 1st Law”
24 Submission Requirements
Assignment 3, Task 2 (M4)

Two parts:
Part 1: Explain who you chose the specific references listed in your
answer for Task 1
Provide an example of a reference that you chose not to
