B. they regretted the loss of the horses
C. they had dreams about the lost horses
D. the Spaniards had named it that
The Atlantic Ocean, named for the legendary lost island of Atlantis, has made up for the romantic origin of its name by becoming the most
important commercial highway in the world; yet traces of romance continually mingle with the business of the sea.

For instance, the Spanish adventurers who first sought gold and silver in America frequently found their ships becalmed, usually on the edge of
the steady trade winds - about 30 degrees north or south latitude. A sailing ship could carry only so much water, and as it lay motionless under
a hot sun for days or weeks, the tortures of thirst were agonizing.

The horses were generally the first victims. They had to be thrown overboard when they died or became crazed with thirst. Because the
Spanish caballeros thought highly of their horses, even crediting them with souls, they suffered great remorse and believed the ghosts of the
proud war horses were haunting the scene. They saw the restless spirits in their dreams and related their dreams to sailors.

Whenever the mariners passed that way, they would see in the spray or clouds images of wild horses “hearing down on them, they began to
call the broad belts of calm the "horse latitudes”, the romantic name by which they are known today.

Which TWO of the following are mentioned as common mistakes?
A) Swimmers often roll their bodies too much when breathing.
B) Many beginners don't lift their heads high enough.
C) They look backwards when breathing.
D) They don't exhale sufficiently.
E) They need to be told when to inhale.

Most of the beginning swimmers if they make a mistake, the biggest mistake they make is over rolling when they
turn to breathe, and that's breathing late and not only turning their chant but returning their whole body, their
hips, their ankles and almost rolling on their backs to breathe.

Another problem we see with beginning swimmers is holding their heads too high when they take a breath. The
same idea, there's a trough that's right alongside of your face as you're swimming. You want to look backwards
in a diagonally rear-facing direction so you want to see what's behind you, not what's alongside what's ahead. If
you do this by having your line of vision, be focused behind you and avoid lifting your head.

Another mistake that beginning swimmers typically make is holding their breaths. We want you to have constant
exhalation in fact, your primary thought when you're swimming freestyle should be on exhaling. No swimmer
ever has to be told to inhale, but many who hold their breath too much having incomplete exhalation in carbon
dioxide build-up which quickly... quickly adds to fatigue and energy loss. So make sure that you're always
exhaling.

The idea of building a public park here was first discussed when a property developer proposed a high-rise housing

From about 18,000 until 10,000 BC, long before Stonehenge and the Pyramids, that's when mammoths and
saber-toothed cats still roam the Earth. Prehistoric people painted deep inside caves in this part of Europe. These
weren't just crude doodles but huge in sophisticated projects, executed by artists and supported by an impressive

These caves were discovered accidentally in 1940 by 4 kids and their dogs. Over the next couple of decades, about a

Choose three characteristics of effective teachers from the list below.
A) They use the largest number of exercises
B) They know how to choose examples
C) They pick the right technique at the right moment
D) Being older can be an advantage
E) They are chess players
F) They pay more attention to students

There are several things that we know about really effective teachers. One of them is that the most effective teachers
have the largest number of metaphors, and the largest number of examples to choose from, and the best of choosing
the right ones and techniques at the right moment. So really expert teacher doesn't have to be old... in this. What to
learn from people who've been around for... Really excellent teachers have a vast store of moves.

You think of them as chess players that they can go to any given situation, and so the more moves you have, you
know, the more arrows in your quiver, the more likely you are to be able to get through those sorts of months. But
again just moving, makes a difference to students and being able to pay attention and it's also a way of signaling

Listen to the following advice about how to reduce your spending.

Which TWO of the following tips are NOT given by the speaker?
A) Don’t go shopping when you’ve had a bad day.
B) Don’t spend what you don’t have.
C) Pay off your debts first.
D) Look after what you own.
E) Replace your car every four years.
F) Buy things second-hand.

There's a lot of things that you can do to bring awareness of your spending, and one of the first ones is don't spot shop.
When you know you've had a bad day, don't just go to the mall, don't go somewhere where you're more likely to spend
money.

Er...Live within your means. For a lot of people, that means realizing that they have more month than they have money.
Don't pleasure future life energy today and borrow for things. Look at how much you have available day and simply live
within your means. For most people, if you can't live within your means today, you probably won't be able to live within
your means tomorrow.

Take care of what you have. Yeah, just take that extra step to make sure that things last a little bit longer, you won't have
to replacements fast. Where it out if you're gonna replace that car every 4 years, maybe go an extra year - what would
that mean for you over time.

Do it yourself! A lot of people report that they get a lot of fulfillment and controlling their lives by learning to do things
themselves and they save the money that they would have had to pay to others.

Anticipate your needs. You know your anniversary is going to be the same day each year, don't wait till the last minute
and pay an extra $35 to fed ex that gift.

Research bought by value. Take the time to make sure you get the absolute most for your money, that's getting the
absolute most for your life energy. Get it for less, buy it on sale, or better yet wait till it's on sale, and buy used. Many
times those impulse buys of others are easily found online where you can buy the same product for almost half price.

Now try answering A, B or C for the questions below.

1. What subject does Professor Wigen usually teach?
A) Geography
B) Japanese history
C) Mapmaking
2. What will be covered in this particular class?
A) The history and variety of maps
B) A focus on the most unusual maps
C) The career of famous map-makers
3. Who will teach the course?
A) The lecturer alone
B) The lecturer and artists on the web
C) The lecturer and perhaps some other speakers
4. What does the final assignment involve?
A) Creating a series of questions about a selection of maps
B) Working with other students to collect interesting maps
C) Analysing maps that the lecturer has chosen

I'm Karen Wigen from the history department. My normal teaching is on the history of Japan, and I also have a background in geography.

What does it mean for our imaginations for the perception of the world and for the way we navigate the world that we are surrounded by maps. The
victory of maps is really quite recent, and the ways in which we use them and take them for granted are also quite recent. And it's as...as likely that
this has affected our imaginations as it is that the creation of the printed book changed our notions about narrative, or that the invention of the web
has changed our understanding of... it's become another extension of our brains in a way that affected the way we interface with knowledge.

So the idea of this class is that to create an opportunity to explore the history of maps. When did they really come into widespread usage? The
variety of maps both in their design and in their function, the kind of utility that they've had intended or unintended. What's unusual about maps
compared to other kinds of text they are often created by committees. And also the nature of their circulation as objects as commodities their career
as artifacts in the world from the point of creation through marketing distribution, viewing use, and ultimately archiving and collecting.

It turns out that Stanford has tens of thousands of maps, a very interesting range. We will also explore the web and explore the ways in which artists
are playing with the idiom of cartography in their work. And maybe even have some guest speakers from around campus who use maps in their
own work, and many many diverse uses that one wouldn't necessarily associate with maps or geography per se.

The culminating assignment for this class is a map exercise for their fellow students, where they in consultation with me come up with a topic that
they are particularly interested in. And I help point them towards sources where they could collect maybe a dozen or more maps related to that
particular theme and then pull them together in a pedagogical exercise where they create a series of questions that will lead other people into those
maps and help guide them in asking both substantive analytical questions. We feel actually, direct people not force them up but compel them just to
18
the shared interests of the questions to really look closely and see what they know in those maps, and how they mean as well as what they mean.
https://www.ieltstutor.me/blog/multiple-choice-listening
We cannot help but use cartographic representations as we try to wrap our mind around the big history of human presence on the globe. What is it
about us that we are drawn to this medium, as an expressive possibility, as a functional utility? What is it about our minds and about this form, and
about the way we move through space, and about this form that allows it to have such an enduring hold on...on human literate societies.

1. Many teachers believe that

A) plagiarism is not a big problem
B) too many students are guilty of plagiarism
C) many students copy each other's essays
2. Plagiarism is a problem because
A) a student's true level of ability will not be known
B) students have to rewrite their essays
C) many students do not get caught
3. Teachers can spot plagiarism by
A) using free software
B) comparing different students' writing styles
C) putting key words into a search engine

Interviewer: Students copying material from the internet is a serious problem that according to a survey which found
almost 2 thirds of teaches reckon too many 6 forms as the plagiarizing online material essays. Well, Alison Ryans is with
us in the studio - she's from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers which conducted the survey. Now Alison, just
how big a problem is this online plagiarism?

Alison Ryans: It's a huge problem. Many of our members reported it takes quite a lot of their time but a lot of work to
track it down. But almost more importantly, if you like are equally important for students is that they risk getting no grade
if they get caution - most of them do get caught, and also that they if they don't get caught in the very few who don't,
they go on to the next stage with people having a very false idea of the reliability and it's soon or late we'll catch them
all.

Interviewer: And you conducted the survey, you're forth to the group conducted the survey, how easy is it to spot when
someone has plagiarized or something?

Alison Ryans: It's actually easier than you might think because it can often make quite a difference in style from the kind
of work you know seen throughout the year and as teachers, you know the students were quite well, I will know if...
they're at other work. It's also just a matter of you can just go to Google and you can put in keywords and you'll find the
same material that in fact, the students have probably found. For worse cases, it's all for... if you like, kind of hard to
cases to spot, there's also certain software like the Turnitin software which is used by colleges, by universities but that
would be a cost element attached to that.

Which TWO facilities at the leisure club have recently been improved?
A) the gym
B) the tracks
C) the outdoor pool
D) the indoor pool
E) the sports training for children

On behalf of LP clubs, I'd like to welcome you all here today. My name's Sandy Fisher, and I'm one of
the fitness managers here. Before we start our tour of the club, I'll just run through some basic
information about the facilities we have here, including recent improvements, and explain the types of
membership available.

Our greatest asset is probably our swimming pool which at 25 meters, isn't Olympic-sized, but now
we've expanded it to 8 lanes, it's much wider. This means there are rarely more than a couple of people
at a time in each lane. Unfortunately, there isn't space for an outdoor pool here, but the glass roof on
the swimming pool is partly retractable which means you can enjoy something of the open-air
experience on warmer days. Our recently refurbished fitness suite has all the latest exercise equipment
including 10-year running machines and a wide range of weight training machines.

Each member is given full training and how to operate the equipment, and there is always a trainer on
duty to offer help and advice. Although we do have adult-only times after 6 and at certain times at
weekends, children are well catered for. Older children continue to benefit from a wide range of tuition,
anything from trampolining to yoga.

One thing all our members appreciate about us is that we take very good care of them. This starts on
day one with your personal assessment. You're asked to fill in a questionnaire giving details of any
health problems, one of our personal trainers will then go through this with you.

The trainer will then take you through the safety rules for using the equipment in the fitness suite.
During your next exercise session, a personal trainer will work with you to make sure you understand
these. It's very important to do this because we really do want to avoid having any sports injuries.
There's a lot more to looking after yourself and simply lifting weights.

At the end of the personal assessment, the trainer will draw up a plan outlining what you should try to
achieve within a 6-week period. This will then be reviewed at the end of the 6 weeks.

Now I'll just quickly run through the types of membership we have available. All members must pay a
joining fee of 90 pounds in addition to the raise for the monthly membership fees.

Gold membership entitles you to free entry at all LP clubs. There're now LP clubs in all major cities and
towns, so if you travel a lot, this will be a great advantage. Individual gold membership costs 50 pounds
a month and joint membership for you and your partner will cost 75 pounds.

Premium membership is for professional people whose work commitments make it difficult for them to
use the club during the day. And so LP gives booking preferences to premium members at peak times.
This means you'll find it easier to book the sessions at times that suit you. Reciprocal arrangements with
other LP clubs are available to premium members. Premium membership is for individuals only, but
you'll be sent pulses for guests every month. The monthly fee is 65 pounds.

You don't have to have any special clothes or equipment when you visit the club. We provide ropes and
hair dryers in the changing rooms, which is very important to remember your photo card because you
won't be able to get in without it. For people who aren't working during the day...

Which THREE of these statements are true?
A) The smart fridge is an essential component of kitchens.
B) It is technologically advanced in comparison with other fridges.
C) It alerts users when foods reach their expiry date.

E) It is able to make decisions about food purchases.
F) It can tell users which foods are healthier.

South Korea's LG electronics is banking on its new smart fridge becoming an essential
component of kitchens around the world. The smart fridge is a technological marvel
compared to fridges of the past. It boasts of a food management system that maintains a
list of the food it is storing. It also records the expiry dates of the foods and sends out an
alert via wifi when that date has been reached. Information can be accessed via
smartphone by consumers as they shop in grocery stores allowing them to make informed
decisions about food purchases. LG adds that his fridge can also suggest healthy recipes
based on what it knows is inside.

Which TWO things should students do when applying to the course?

A ... Understand what the course is about.
B ... Think carefully about what they can contribute to the course.
C ... Tell a story about an experience that they have had.
D ... Provide a large quantity of work that shows their ability.
E ... Show an example of their own film work if possible.
F ... Explain why they are interested in the course.

When they're applying really need to reflect, pull for a moment and think what it is that they're
bringing to the course of where they want to go with it.

We want to see evidence that they do have some experience of thinking of telling stories
visually. We don't need to see a great deal, they shouldn't panic about quantity but they
should reflect on what they have caught, that couldn't show that their talent and their creative
abilities.

Ideally, we would like to see moving image work but if it's an applicant has not had the
chance to do that, then they're welcome to show his drawings, photographs, animations, any
work that is thinking about telling stories over time.

How to establish a routine for your toddler:

one.
C) Busy parents need help with their children.
D) Parents should include the child’s sleep times in their schedules.
E) Meal times don’t need to be included in parents’ plans.

the more routine your schedule is the more your child'll follow behind that
https://www.tutorspeaking.com/blog/transcript-bai-tap-multiple-choice-ielts-listening-chuyen-de-17
And the topic today is how to establish a routine for your toddler. This is no easy task with the toddler and
part of the difficulty is that the parent has to have a routine. Only if the parent has a very set routine will
the child be able to follow that. That's a big challenge for parents today who are so busy, but the best you
can do is to schedule your routine to include your child, make sure you plan for mealtimes, nap times.

If you're home for dinner a night, make sure you plan for dinner and meals, and bath time, all of those
things should be part of your routine. The more routine your schedule is the more your child will follow
behind that.
