Tutorial 8: PHY101

(MONSOON 2023)

1. A HCl molecule consists of hydrogen atom whose mass mH is 1.01 u and chlorine atom whose
mass is mCl 35.0 u. The center of the two atoms is a distance d = 1.27 x 10 -10 m = 127 pm apart.
What is the rotational inertia of the molecule about an axis perpendicular to the line joining the
two atoms and passing through the center of mass of the molecule.

2. You have finished watching a movie on Blu-ray and the disc is slowing to a stop. The disc’s
angular velocity at t = 0 is 27.5 rad/s, and its angular acceleration is a constant - 10.0 rad/s2. A line
PQ on the disc’s surface lies along the +x-axis at t = 0 (See the figure). (a) What is the disc’s
angular velocity at t = 0.300 s? (b) What angle does the line PQ make with the +x-axis at this time?
