What’s Next?

Why are there always instructions found in boxes, or manuals that come with purchases?

Well, the world is in a constant state of creation and evolution; it is nearly impossible for the

human race to keep up. That is where the development of guidance falls into place. No one on

earth can possibly know how to do everything they come across at first glance because there are

just too many components. There are not only many components to physical things, or utilities,

but there are also many components to people and places. The official visitors guide of Laredo is

a small booklet that holds the instructions to have fun-filled days, weeks, and or months in

Laredo. This document is used to encourage traveling adults that are not familiar with Laredo to

learn and explore the area by providing them with a small historic background and information

on many local activities. Furthermore, this is only accomplished through its specific type of

writing, or genre, which is a combination of an analysis and report.

An analysis and report is the best way for this document to communicate to the readers

about Laredo. Based on the textbook, Everyone's an Author, an analysis is, “a genre that breaks

something down into its component parts so that those papers can be thought about methodically

in order to understand the whole,” the document uses this process with Laredo. The guide breaks

down laredo into hotels, restaurants, culture, entertainment, family fun, and where to shop. Each

of those sections is then broken down into specific locations relating to that topic; this is all done

in the effort for the reader to better understand Laredo as a whole. The book also defines a report

as follows, “a writing genre that presents information to inform readers on a subject,” again, the

subject is Laredo. Within the document there are descriptions, contact information, and locations

of many places and events that take place in Laredo. Therefore the writing style of an analysis

and a report combined is the only correct way to clearly communicate information to the visitors

of Laredo.

The document, which was found at Hampton Inn in Laredo, is communicating Laredo,

more specifically, what Laredo has to offer. The document opens with a note from the visitors

bureau giving a little bit of a background of the document and Laredo itself. The document has

many maps to physically show the reader where places are located. In the “Where to Stay”

portion, there is a map of each Hotel in the area with a key at the bottom to show what hotel is

being represented. The document also includes many lists with headings and subheadings to

describe what is being listed; within the list there are addresses and phone numbers of each listed

place, whether it be restaurants, arcades, or parks.

The document’s goals are to make the reader’s experience in Laredo the best it can be.

The document reads, “whether you are here on business or leisure we want you to have a unique

experience,” it is safe to assume from this quote the goal of the document is to provide a trip that

is memorable and enjoyable. The belief of the document is that Laredo has much to offer to

those who are visiting. Within the document there is a diverse listing of food, activities, and

more; there are inputs for introverts, extroverts, thrill seekers, and party animals. This all leads

up to the values of the document. The values of the document are the people here to visit. If the

creators of the document didn’t care about the visitors, the document wouldn’t have been created

to begin with. Their value is to communicate to visitors what Laredo has to offer to make their

time spent here a great experience tailored to their interests.

The document has a layout that is easy to find, easy to read. There are many pictures and

small descriptions that aid the reader in being knowledgeable of that specific location;

furthermore, there are headings and subheadings that allow for easy and swift navigation of the

document. The reader is provided with contact information for locations listed including: phone

numbers, e-mails, and websites. The document provides all information needed on a location to

specifically plan for a self pleasing visit, but if the reader is not satisfied, the document provides

the reader with resources to gain more knowledge on the location of interest.

All things have a way of communication. This document, Laredo Official Visitor’s

Guide, uses an analysis and report writing style to communicate all that Laredo has to offer; in

doing so they use lists with headings and subheadings to organize information, small descriptions

to briefly explain what a location is, and provide contact information and the address of each

location, and using pictures and maps to further inform the reader just like an instruction manual.

Most purchases come with instruction manuals or a guide, and this document is a diverse guide

to Laredo. A guide used by anyone and everyone that is traveling to or doesn't know much about

Laredo. The only way for this document to accomplish all that it does is by using the writing

styles of an analysis and a report.
