Cautions concerning static electricity

Use an anti-static wristband and anti-static bags to prevent the buildup of static
electricity when handling or transporting parts such as circuit boards or laser
diodes, which can easily be damaged by static electricity.

About the laser diode

The PF-R2055Vi uses a high-output semiconductor laser. If procedures and safety
guidelines are not followed correctly, the radiation from the laser diode may injure
your eyes. Note that the laser diode can be damaged by static electricity.
C AUTION !
The laser diode is extremely sensitive to static electricity. Damage
to it from static electricity may result in a shortening of the laser's
service life.

1-2 Laser maintenance and safety

Under normal conditions
When all of the metal plates encasing the PF-R2055Vi are in place, the entire
machine can be thought of as a single area. Anything within that area is within the
laser work area, while anything outside it is outside the laser work area.
All of the metal plates are fitted with interlock devices that shut off power to the laser
if the plates are removed, preventing the laser from turning on unexpectedly. This
means that only the mildest laser safety standards, Class 1, are required.

While performing maintenance with metal plates removed

After removing the covers and disabling the interlocks, the entire room in which the
PF-R2055Vi is housed should be considered a laser work area.
This means that laser safety standards for CLASS 3b units must be followed.

When working with the laser and related parts

When focusing or optically adjusting the laser, follow the rules indicated below.
Do not bring any flammable objects into the laser work area.
Do not place any objects with a reflective surface near the path of the
laser beam. (e.g. rings, watches, glossy or shiny plated Allen wrenches)
In order to shrink your pupils, make the room as bright as possible.
Use semiconductor laser radiation safety goggles (glasses).
Display a sign limiting entry to the laser area to those working on the
laser, in order to prevent accidents to other personnel.

1-3 Basic information
Features of the PF-R2055Vi.
Auto-loading and unloading
The PF-R2055Vi works fully automatically, from plate loading to unloading.
Since the plate cassette houses up to 50 plates (when all plates are the same
size and same thicknesses), long periods of continuous operation can be
achieved, maximizing efficiency.
Automatic interleaf removal
The PF-R2055Vi is provided with a standard slip paper removal function. The
sensor inside the plate cassette accurately distinguishes between the presence
of slip paper or plates. When slip paper is encountered, it is moved to the
disposal area, while plates are transported to the exposure unit. Operators
are thus freed from having to remove slip paper for every exposure, enhancing
efficiency.
Reading preset plate cassette parameters
Plate types, sizes, and printing press information can be registered as ID
codes for individual plate cassettes. The PF-R2055Vi automatically reads the
ID code and recalls the registered data when the cassette is inserted. This
saves operators the time and trouble of inputting data to the recorder each
time cassettes are changed.
Internal punch function (option)
The PF-R2055Vi can be used with a punching system (optional) that punches
each plate when loaded. Additionally, two different punch configurations are
available, which support various types of printing presses.
Buffer system
The PF-R2055Vi adopts a buffer system, using SDRAM memory (one GB as
standard) to improve output efficiency. With this system, it is possible to receive
RIPped data while using data in the memory to expose a plate. The storage
of RIPped data and the handling of data flow for two processes means that the
PF-R doesn't stop and wait for data, so slowdowns can be prevented.
A wide range of output resolutions and high precision output
The PF-R2055Vi offers a wide range of output resolutions, from 1200 to 3000
dpi. With this wide range of resolution and highly sensitive direct plates, letters
and images can be output with high precision.
High precision plate positioning
Since the PF-R2055Vi employs a flat bed scanning method, it doesn't subject
plates to any strain. Plates are loaded onto the table flat, and exposed without
receiving any strain. The special plate positioning system assures that plates
are set accurately, then secured by vacuum contact, so that a wide variety of
plate sizes can be used with high precision.

Palladio 2-3
Smooth and accurate table movement
To enhance the precision of exposures with the flat bed scanning method,
accurate table movement is required. The PF-R2055Vi's exposing table moves
across the exposure area with the aid of a precision engineered transport
system of exceptional stability. Smooth motion assures trouble-free exposure,
so you can achieve high reproducibility even at high resolutions.
Advanced optical system
The PF-R2055Vi also features a specially designed optical system for
reproducing uniform dot shapes. In addition, the violet laser diode (405 nm)
and flat bed scanning optical system make possible accurate exposures at a
speed of 7.4 mm per second at a 2400 dpi resolution.
Supporting a variety of plate sizes
The PF-R2055Vi supports a wide range of plate sizes, from 280 mm x 450
mm to 635 mm x 754 mm. The most appropriate plate size can be selected
depending on the various job.
Support for various RIPs
The PF-R2055Vi supports a variety of RIPs, so it's easy to fit into your current
work flow. It is equipped with a high-speed SCSI-2 (16 bit) interface for fast
data transfer.
Manual loading function
It is possible to load a plate onto the table by hand under the yellow safety
lights.
A good workable and light room has you load a different size plate by
hand, when comparing with the previous dark rom. The manual loading can
variy the users’ jobs.

Height adjustment of the cassette carrier's casters

When you set the cassette carriers on the unit, perform the caster height adjustment
if necessary.
The following shows the points to be kept in mind when adjusting the height.
Adjust the height while the plate supply unit is connected to the main unit. Refer
to Fig.1.
Check and be aware of the positional relationship between the rail for setting the
cassette carriers and the guide bearing.

(1) If the cassette carrier caster is set too high, the guide bearing for the cassette
carrier is too far from the guide rail for setting the cassette carrier as shown in Fig.1-1.
(2) On the other hand, if the cassette carrier caster is set too low, the guide
bearing for the cassette carrier will hit the rail for setting the cassette carrier or it
cannot be set in the plate supply unit as shown in Fig.1-2.

How to judge if appropriate exposure has been performed

In primary scanning pattern, tinted and unexposed areas are arranged

repeatedly with the same width in the secondary scanning direction. In
the primary scanning direction, [A/a] to [H/h] are output with the same
width by the PF-R2055Vi as shown in the figure 1.
In secondary scanning pattern, tinted and unexposed areas are arranged
repeatedly with the same width in the secondary scanning direction. In
the primary scanning direction, [I/i] to [P/p] are output with the same width
by the PF-R2055Vi as shown in the figure 2.
After the exposed plate patterns are examined, the appropriate light
intensity value can be chosen so that with this setting, each pair of [A/a]
to [P/p] widths are identical.

4. Set the new Start sensor as the above picture.

For positioning for back and forth, those two screws' heads are against the bracket.
For positioning for left and right, the screw head is centered in the cutout of the
bracket.
And secure the screws.
5. The following is a procedure to check if the sensor is set appropriately.
Release the interlocks, and set "SPECIAL ON" under the maintenance mode so that
the machine works without plate.
Expose an internal test pattern under M-EXP to check if the machine does not give
"Machine error 15". (If you encouter this error, it means that the sensor position is not
correct or that there may be other causes.)
If no error, adjust the sensor position ne s o t hat t he LD b eam c an hit t he center of
the light receiver on the sensor unit.

2-27 Burn-out unit (BURN-V board) Replacement

There are two Burn-out units (BURN-V board) for each Home side and Away side in the

A. Home side in the primary scan direction

1. Prepare the attached plastic plate jig as
the left picture, which comes with the new
Burn-out unit. This jig is to measure the
distance between the Burn-out unit and the
Plastic jig plate
Table surface. The thickness is 3.2mm.
2. Draw out the plate supply unit and open
the cover No.9.
3. Remove the Burn-out unit being replaced.
4. Move the Table to some approprite plate
using the command M1 under ACT1.
Insert the jig plate between the Table and
the Burn-out unit attached, and secure the
Burn- out unit.

5. Measure the distance between the Table edge

and the Burn-out unit as the left picture.
6. Remove the jig plate, and close the cover and
put back the plate supply unit.
7. Set plates whose size is 635 (V) X 754 (H)
(less than 754 is OK) into the cassette, and
input 30 into each GRIP and A-GRIP, which
means to expose 575mm as the maximum
image size in the primary scan direction.
8. Select "MULTIPLE" in MODE and POSI in
Plate type (positive / negative), and expose

This distance
P13 (50% tint) 50mm length at 2400dpi under
-EXP.
And then select NEGA (negative) and expose
the same one, and chage to POSI again and
expose the same one. And discharge the plate.

9. As the above picture, the area of LD for

imaging and the area of Burn-out LED are
overlapped. It is defined that the appropriate
amount of the overlap is 1 to 1.5mm.
If you see a black line as the left picture, set the
Burn-out unit inside more, and if the overlap is
less than 1mm, set the Burn-out unit outside
more. And repeat the procedure No.7 and 8
Burn-out unit is too out so that the overlap amount becomes 1 to
1.5mm.

B. AWAY side in the primary scan direction

1. Remove the covers No.12 and 13.
2. Remove the Burn-out unit and set the new
one using the same jig plate to adjust the
distance between the Table surface and the
Burn-out LED unit as same as the Home side.

3. Read the current micrometer value.
4. Loosen the screws for the collimate lens
unit and move it 10 to 20 microns forward or
backward, and then secure it again. At this time,
check if there is no gap between the lens unit
and the two positioning pins using the 10 microns
thickness gauge as the left picture.
Note) When the collimate lens moves 10 to 20
microns, the actual focus on the plate equals to
60 to 120 microns.
5. Close all the covers and expose the pattern
P19(focus pattern, 2400dpi) under M-EXP
positive.
6. As the following pattern is exposed, repeat the
above procedure 4 and 5 to get the best result.
