Identify at least 2 companies that includes supplier diversity and inclusions program in their
organizations. Make a reflection paper about these companies.
ExxonMobil
They promote inclusive sourcing by championing local, small, and diverse suppliers in order
to increase competition and innovation while striving to make positive impacts on communities.
Where there is a lack of diverse, small, or local suppliers, ExxonMobil aims to contribute to building
capacity within their supply chain. They purchase goods and services from local suppliers and build
their capabilities through training programs. This approach creates a competitive advantage for
ExxonMobil through access to qualified and reliable local suppliers. It also helps in building long-
term, local economic capacity, strengthening our relationships as a valued community members and
supporting the objective of the related U.N. SDGs.
According to ExxonMobil, working with diverse suppliers creates new perspectives, ideas
and practices that help grow their business. They strive to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships
with a diverse supplier base that contributes to their growth via outreach, business development
and training programs. They are committed to economic empowerment and aim to increase the
number of women-owned and historically disadvantaged-owned businesses in our global supply
chain. I believed ExxonMobil understands the importance of building and maintaining a qualified and
competitive supply chain in the countries in which they operate. Their approach to local supplier
development and utilization includes purchasing goods and services from local suppliers and building
their capabilities to help create a competitive local industrial base. They have also highlighted that to
become a supplier for ExxonMobil a local vendor must meet their robust safety, technical,
environmental, and human rights expectations, and requirements. When possible, they work with
businesses owned by local individuals, women and members of historically disadvantaged
communities to help them become competitive vendors that can contribute to their business and
the long-term economic progress of their community.
Starbucks Corp.
In the same list of “America’s Top Organizations for Multicultural Business Opportunities”
developed because of a poll sponsored by DIV2000.com, Starbucks Corp. ranked as #33. This is
company that every coffee-lover know, their story began in 1971 back when they were a roaster and
retailer of whole bean and ground coffee, tea and spices with a single store in Seattle’s Pike Place
Market. Today, they are privileged to connect with millions of customers every day in more than 80
markets. Starbucks is named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick.” Their logo is also
inspired by the sea – featuring a twin-tailed siren from Greek mythology.
They believe Supplier Diversity is a smart business decision and business imperative in
today’s business climate. It helps them identify and deliver high-quality products and services across
all business channels, while driving value and economic development in the communities they serve.
They also believe that they have a responsibility to help create opportunity, advance equity and
encourage economic growth in every community they serve. Starbucks launched the Community
Resilience Fund in 2021 with the commitment to invest $100M to advance racial equity and
environmental resilience by supporting small business growth and local nonprofits in communities
with historically limited access to capital by 2025. To date, $37 million was allocated against the
Fund’s goal to invest $100 million by 2025. They also have Supplier Diversity Goal in which they
committed to spend $1.5 billion annually with diverse suppliers by 2030. In FY22, $882 million had
been spent with diverse suppliers.
