ROUND 1 SPEAKER 2 FIONA

OPENING SPEECH

Trade unions which have been corrupted are not a socialist

structure. Corruption within various unions is the world’s disease
today and transparency is the vaccine. Good morning to the
esteemed judges and my opponents. I, Fiona Harris, representing
THE VELAMMAL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, and am here to argue
that trade unions corrupted by the ruling class are not a viable
structure for a socialist organization.

According to the speaker 1 of the preposition, trade unions are

clearly not socialist mainly because of corruption. We already know
that corrupted trade unions experience several problems like the loss
of trust, loss of membership and so on. The loss of trust is enough to
undermine the idea of socialism among the trade unions. This loss of
trust can lead to the members losing their faith with the trade unions
and eventually a hierarchy system would be created within these
unions. This may lead to the accumulation of power in the hands of a
few individuals within these trade unions. This corrodes the idea of
socialism. So, how can you so firmly argue that trade unions even
being corrupted by working class are still socialist.? This house
strongly opposes the fact that these corrupted trade unions are still
socialist.

In fact, trade unions were never created to fight for socialism. Trade
unions emerged as a response to the exploitative conditions and
power imbalances between workers and employers within capitalist
systems. If trade unions were never created to fight for socialism,
corrupted trade unions are socialist right? ABSOLUTELY NOT! In India
as well, many trade unions have failed miserably due to the lack of
unity. This happens when trade unions are dragged inside the
political arena or controlled by a single powerful business. Trade
unions cannot align themselves with the principles of socialism,
when corruption is involved.
A core principle of socialism is advocating for the interests and well
beings of the working class. When trade unions become corrupted,
their leaders may prioritize gain or collude with employers thereby
betraying the very workers they are meant to represent. This
undermines the socialist objective. When workers lose their trust in
their union leadership due to corruption, it can lead to divisions
within the workforce, making it harder to mobilize and effectively
advocate the worker’s rights and interests. Corruption within trade
unions has also lead to the misappropriation of funds meant for the
welfare and benefits of the workers.

When so many problems exist due to corruption, how can you still
argue that corrupted trade unions are socialist? Trade unions
themselves were never created to fight for socialism. Their primary
purpose is to protect and advance the rights of workers within the
existing economic system. Finally, to sum up my speech, labor unions
were mainly created to protect the workers from exploitation by the
employer but corrupted trade unions provide protection to the
employer rather than the workers.
