We are shown that the fairy king “Oberon” is in a fight with the fairy queen “Titania” over a

boy she adopted. In the process of this argument Titania hurts Oberon's ego and it is clear
he is affected by this ‘Well, go thy way.Thou Shalt not from this grove injury till I torment thee
for this injury’! In order to assert his dominance once again he sends his right hand Puck to
look for cupids flower as Oberon wants to punish Titania by making her fall in love with a vile
creature “What thou seest when thou dost wake, Do it for thy true love take; Love and
languish for his sake, Be it ounce or cat or bear, Pard, or bear with bristles hair in the eyes
that shall appear when thou waks’t, it is thy dear Wake when some vile thing is near!”.
Oberon wants Titania to fall in love with a vile creature for his own entertainment and to
show that it is he who has more power.

While Oberon was roaming in the forest, he came across Demetrius and Helena, and he
saw how Helena was begging Demetrius for his love. Oberon felt bad for Helena and told
Puck to put some of the juice onto the eyes of an “Athenian man”. Coincidentally Puck
instead of finding Demetrius, he found Lysander, who was running away with Hermia, since
he had no accurate description of the “Athenian man”, he put the juice into Lysander's eyes.
Ironically, when Lysander woke up, the first thing he saw was the face of Helena, so he fell
in love with Helena. This event caused even more drama and chaos as Helena was
Hermia‘s best friend, and now Lysander had fallen in love with her. This caused a lot of
confusion in the play and a lot of unique scenes as well. “There he is my master said
despised the Athenian maid; and here the maiden, sleeping sound in the dark and dirty
ground. Pretty sad, she dust not lie near this lack love, this kill courtesy, Churl, upon thy
eyes I throw”. Due to Puck not knowing the difference between Demetrius and Lysander,
instead of helping two people form a relationship, his mistake cost two people to ruin theirs.

in order to make sure that Titania falls in love with a horrible creature, Puck turns the head of
Bottom bottom, an actor, into one of a donkey and let him make a fool of himself. ‘ O
monstrous! O Strange! We are haunted! Pray, masters, fly masters! Help.” This was the
reaction of one of Bottoms colleagues after seeing his face, Bottom on the other hand thinks
they are just acting weird and does not notice the change, coincidentally Titania wakes up
and looks at Bottom and instantly falls in love with him. bottom does not question this
occurrence and lets her take care of him. ‘Not so either; but if I had wit enough to get out of
this wood, I have enough serve mine own turn’. Bottom thinks extremely high of himself and
likes the fact that he is being treated like a king.

As Oberon sees the mistake Puck has made he tells him to fix it and pour the juice into the
eyes of Demetrius, this is a weird situation as originally both Lysander and Demetrius were
in love with Hermia and now they have switched over to Helena, ‘ O Helen, goddess, nymph,
perfect, divine!” this is Demetrius describing Helena’s attributes, Helena is confused about
the sudden change “Never did mockers waste more idle breath”. she does not believe that
both of these men love her and thinks that they are making a fool of her.

all this magic in the play causes a lot of chaos and confusion. It causes everything to flip
upside down, magic causes confusion, it is an integral part of the play and place a big role in
setting the mood for certain scenes
