Ignition Coil Resistance Test (Accord 3.0L & Prelude - External Coil)

1. Turn ignition off. Remove primary and secondary leads from ignition coil. Using an ohmmeter, check
primary resistance between ignition coil connector terminals "A" and "B". See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 .
Resistance should be as specified. See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE table.
2. Check secondary resistance between ignition coil connector terminal "A" and secondary output
terminal (coil tower). See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE table. Check for continuity between
terminals "A" and "C". Continuity should exist. If readings are not within specification, replace coil.

dash fuse/relay box.
2. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and suspect ignition coil harness connector
terminal No. 2 (Black wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check for
open in Black wire between suspect ignition coil and ground connector G101. Ground connector

3. Disconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Check for continuity between body ground and PCM 31-pin
harness connector "C" terminals No. 3 (Blue wire), No. 4 (Yellow/Green wire), No. 12 (Black/Red
wire), No. 13 (Yellow wire), No. 14 (Red wire) and/or No. 23 (White/Blue wire), individually. If
continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, check for short in wire between suspect
ignition coil terminal No. 1 and PCM 31-pin connector "C".
4. Reconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Turn ignition switch to START position. Measure voltage
between ground and suspect ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1. If about .5 volts exists,

IGNITION CONTROL MODULE

NOTE: If MIL comes on, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See
appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Before preforming IGNITION
CONTROL MODULE INPUT TEST, ensure ignition, fuel and emissions
systems are operating properly. Ignition Control Module (ICM) is located in
distributor housing. See Fig. 5-Fig. 11 .

NOTE: Manufacturer does not provide tests for the ICM, they provide a series of
input test to ensure the rest of the system is working properly before
replacing components. If all tests check okay, the ICM should be replaced.
Odyssey and SLX are not equipped with an ICM.

Ignition Control Module (ICM) Input Test (Accord 4-Cyl.)

1. Turn ignition off. Remove distributor cap, rotor and leak cover. Disconnect wires from ICM. See Fig.
5 or Fig. 6 . Turn ignition on. Check for voltage between ground and ICM Black/Yellow wire. If
battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for an open in
Black/Yellow wire between ignition switch and ICM.
2. Turn ignition on. Check for voltage between ground and ICM White/Black wire (F23A1 and F23A4
engines), or White/Blue wire (F23A5 engine). See Fig. 5 or Fig. 6 . If battery voltage exists, go to
next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check ignition coil. See appropriate IGNITION COIL
RESISTANCE TEST. Replace coil as necessary. If ignition coil is okay, check for an open in
White/Black wire (F23A1 and F23A4 engines) or White/Blue wire (F23A5 engine), between ICM and
ignition coil.
3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 25-pin "B" connector. Check for continuity in Yellow/Green wire
between PCM 25-pin connector terminal B13 and ICM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If
continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Yellow/Green wire.
4. Check for continuity between ground and Yellow/Green wire. If continuity does not exist, go to next
step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Yellow/Green wire. If continuity does not exist,
replace ICM.

Ignition Control Module (ICM) Input Test (Accord 3.0L)

1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 3-pin connector from distributor (ICM). See Fig. 7. Turn ignition on.
Check for voltage between ground and ICM harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Yellow wire). If
battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check ignition coil. See
appropriate IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE TEST. Replace coil as necessary. If ignition coil is
okay, check for an open in Black/Yellow wire between ICM and ignition coil. See WIRING
DIAGRAMS article.
2. Ensure ignition is on. Check for voltage between ground and ICM harness connector terminal No. 3
(Blue wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check ignition
coil. See appropriate IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE TEST. Replace coil as necessary. If ignition

replace ICM. If continuity does not exist and all other tests are okay, replace ICM.

Ignition Control Module (ICM) Input Test (Civic)

1. Turn ignition off. Remove distributor cap, rotor and leak cover (TEC). Disconnect wires from ICM.
See Fig. 8 or Fig. 9 . Turn ignition on. Check for voltage between ground and Black/Yellow wire. If
battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for an open in

IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING

Ensure idle speed and ignition timing are set to specification. See appropriate IDLE SPEED & IGNITION
TIMING tables. For adjustment procedures, see ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Before checking
or adjusting idle, ensure MIL has not been reported on, timing is correct, and that spark plugs, air cleaner
and PCV system are okay.

IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING
