The 2011 earthquake in Japan

The earthquake took place in Japan on the east coast of Asia. The earthquake struck at 2:46 pm on
Friday March 11th, 2011. This earthquake was rated at a 9.0 on the Richter scale, this is the 4 th largest
earthquake ever recorded. This earthquake resulted in 10 tsunami waves. A cause of this
earthquake is because the plates move approximately 8cm each year. The pacific plate -which is an
oceanic plate - is subducted below the North American plate –which is a continental plate. this
earthquake resulted in 16,000 people dying and 6,000 people getting hurt. The Funashima nuclear
plant was damaged and three of its reactors had a meltdown. The tsunami systems worked, and
many people managed to seek high grounds. Sea walls were built long before the earthquake, but
people complained about it being ugly. There was a focus on getting medical supplies to the shelters
this earthquake caused serious damage.
