NEBULIZATION THERAPY
Any people with chronic repsiratory diseases
such as asthma and CODB uses their nebulizer
to take their medication in the form of a
misterecin inhaled in the lungs
Nebulizers are often recommended for patients
who have a hard time using inhalers because of
the issues of patient who are unable inhale
deeply enough where aother devices
Nebulization Therapy
- Is the process of medication
administration via inhalation. It utilizes
a nebulizer which transports
medications to the lungs by means of
mist inhalation

Name of drug, dosage, and frequency
- Bronchodilator-most common
nebulized drug
Is a drug classification when given it dilates
or widen the airways in the lungs making
the person easy to breathe such as in the
cases of asthma or COPB. Ex. salbutimol
- Antibiotic -used to treat chest infections
- Opiates/analgesic – used to treat
dysmea in client’s with oviola carsimona
- Corticosteroids – used to treat allergic
reactions causing broncho spasms
incase of asthma
- Anticholinergic – use in the
management of asthma
Indications of Nebulization Therapy
Nebulization Therapy is used to deliver
medications along the respiratory tract and if it
is indicated to various respiratory problem and
diseases such as:
- Asthma
- Pneumonia
- Cystic fibrosis
- COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease)
Purposes:
When given nebulization therapy aids to:
- Relieve bronchospasm
- Liquify thick mucus secretions
- Expectorate bronchial secretions
Through the inhaled misparticles
MODE OF DELIVERY
Tee-adaptor – is used for patients who are on a
mechanical ventilator and needs nebulization
therapy
Trach Mask – used for clients with trichostomy
implaced
Face mask – used to repeat the administration
of nebulize therapy to patient who are unable
to use a mouthpiece
Mouthpiece – preferred over a mask because it
reduces the ocular and facial exposure to
inhaled drops
Equipments
Nebulizer machine – is a device that can convert
a jack from a solution into aerosol form by
means of a compressor. It comes from diff
desings and sizez but all shared the same
functions. It could be electric generated and
battery operated
Oxygen source – incase nebulizer machine is not
avail or in hospital settings such as ICU. Oxygen
source is being used as a compressor. Just set
the rate into 6-8 liter when providing
nebulization
Tubing – it has two ends, one ends connects to
the delivery device and the other end to the
nebulizer machine outlet
Nebulization cap – it is where medication is
poured and it is also where the delivery device
is attached and as well the tubings being
connected at air inlet port located at the
Medication (ex. Bronchodilator)
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
- Closely watch all patients on
bronchodilators
Because bronchodilators type of drug
produces side effects
Watch for these signs:
- Increase heart rate
- Agitation
- Restlessness
And the nurse should be watchful for the signs
and record of the doctor immediately
It is imporatint to educate our patient to take
the medications regularly to achieve the
maximum effectiveness
It is also important to teach our patient on how
to perform properly the nebulization especially
if its going to be from you
Patient teaching on:
1. compliance to therapy
2. proper way of doing the therapy
- when using the mouthpiece:
Instruct the client to breathe with the lips
tightly sealed around the mouthpiece
This is to ensure that the maximum quantity of
drugs is being inhaled
When using the mask:
- Ensure that mask is properly applied to
the clients face
- Instruct patient to take slow, deep
breathes in through the mouth and out
through the nose
It is recommended to observe good oral while
on nebulization therapy because fungal
infection is likely to develop if some particles of
the drug like bronchodilator is left in the oral
mucosa
That’s why we should encourage our patient to
rinse their mouth after every nebulization
Encourage patient to perform good oral hygiene
after each nebulization
Use mouthpiece delivery device for Glaucoma
patient if will receive anticholinergic drug (E.g.
ipratropium)
If our patient has glaucoma meaning the
person’s optic nerve is damage often cause by
an abnormal high intraocular pressure and has
to receive anticholinergic drug.
It is probably to use mouthpiece device as the
delivery device as this reduces the leakage of
nebulize solution into the eyes
Because anticholinergic drug promotes increase
intraocular pressure. Hence it is contraindicated
to glaucoma cases
