At the conclusion of this course you should be able to:

Describe the Fuel Flow during Priming.

Describe the fuel flow during normal engine operation.

Recognize the Diagnostic Test Ports on the IFSM, and

Describe the IFSM Fuel System Components.

1020 0045 Scene Number:

The following information describes the priming and normal operation of the IFSM,
with a suction side fuel filter, on the X series engine.

1030 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

To fill the system with fuel and purge air from the IFSM; the ECM, at key-on, turns on
the priming pump for two minutes. During this two minute period the priming pump
draws fuel from the tank to the IFSM inlet and inlet screen. This 140 micron mesh
screen prevents debris from entering the lift pump.

1040 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The fuel from the inlet screen flows through the priming pump and fills the suction
side fuel filter. Fuel enters the top of the filter and flows down the sides of the filter
before moving up the center of the filter and flowing through the anti-drainback
valve at the top of the filter outlet.

1050 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The fuel then flows up the right side of the IFSM to the gear pump inlet.

1060 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

Any air that was trapped in the low pressure side of the IFSM is routed from the top
of the IFSM through a passage in the IFSM mounting gasket to the air bleed check
valve and onto the IFSM drain.

1070 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The priming pump will shut down after the two minute period has passed. The
engine is now ready to be started. During normal operation the gear pump pulls the
fuel from the tank through the inlet screen and the inlet check valve that bypasses
the priming pump.

1080 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

After flowing through the inlet check valve the fuel flows through the fuel filter.
Contaminants in the fuel are removed by the 98% efficient 25 micron filtering media.

1090 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The fuel then flows up the right side of the IFSM to the gear pump and enters the
top of the gears. All the fuel at this point is under a vacuum.
1100 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The fuel travels around the gears in the gear pump and is forced out of the gears at
the bottom as the gear teeth mesh. Pressure begins to develop in the system. This
pressure continues to increases with engine speed.

1110 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

As the fuel moves out of the gear pump it passes the 320 psi regulator. This regulator
dumps to drain when excessive pressure is developed in the system.

1120 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

Fuel from the outlet of the gear pump is routed down and over to the center of the
IFSM to the fuel shut off valve. When energized by the ECM the shut off valve opens
and fuel flows through the valve to the actuator feed rail.

1130 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The fuel out of the shut off valve flows into the center of the actuator feed rail and
splits to flow to the front and rear banks of timing and metering actuators.

1140 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The 250 psi regulator is located below the shut off valve and regulates the actuator
feed rail pressure. When the rail pressure in the system exceeds 250 psi the
regulator dumps the fuel back to the inlet of the gear pump.

1150 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

Any air trapped in the rail pressure side of the system is routed with the actuator
feed rail decay flow through the 8 thousandths inch orifice and to drain.

1155 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The 8 thousandths inch orifice connects the actuator feed rail to drain to accomplish
this air purging. Additionally at shutdown, fuel flows from the metering high
pressure rail through the 5 psi check valves in each of the metering actuators and
into the actuator feed rail. This internal 8 thousandths inch orifice allows pressure in
the actuator feed rail to decay by allowing fuel flow through the orifice and into the
drain line. This improves starting during hot start conditions.

1160 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

The gear pump is driven from the camshaft and receives lubrication from oil passing
through a drilling in the head to the IFSM mounting gasket. The lubrication oil is
returned to the head through the drive gear cavity.

1180 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

A quick disconnect diagnostic port is located in the inlet passage to the gear pump at
the top of the IFSM. During priming pump operation this passage will see priming
pump pressure. During normal engine operation this passage will see vacuum
created by the gear pump. Maximum fuel inlet restriction for the suction side filter
is measured at this point. Refer to service literature for specifications.
1190 0045 Scene Number:

Audio

At the bottom of the IFSM a quick disconnect diagnostic port is located in the
actuator feed rail passage way just below the 8 thousandths inch orifice. This
diagnostic port measures regulated gear pump output. Refer to service literature for
specifications.
