CEWB1014: Mechanics of Fluids

NAME: ____________________________________________ ID: __________

QUESTION 1

a) A group of students are given a task to conduct an experiment in the laboratory to determine fluid
properties. They filled the cylindrical can 160 mm in diameter with an oil to a depth of 110 mm.

i) If the oil have mass of 1.58 kg, compute its density, specific weight and specific gravity.

ii) An open container with 120 mm width and 180 mm long is holding 75 mm depth of water. Then,
the students continue their experiment by filling oil from cylindrical can into the container.
Compute the pressure at the bottom of the container.
[5 marks]

b) A cylindrical tank contains water at a height of 55 mm as shown in Figure 1. Inside is a smaller open
cylindrical tank containing cleaning fluid at height, h. If PB is 13.40 kPa gage and PC is 13.42 kPa
gage, calculate gage pressure PA and height, h of cleaning fluid. Given specific gravity of cleaning
fluid is 0.8. Assume that the cleaning fluid is prevented from moving to the top of the tank.
