Problem solving
1. The gate shown is hinged at B and rest on a smooth floor at A. The gate is 4m square and oil
(0.85) stands to a height of 2.0m above the hinge B. The air above the oil surface is under
pressure of 12kPa. If the gate weighs 8kN, determine the vertical force F required to open it.

2. Two vessels are connected to a differential manometer using mercury, the connecting tubing
being filled with oils (s=0.90). The higher-pressure vessel is 66in. lower in elevation than the
other.
a) If the mercury readings is 4in what is the pressure head difference in ft. of water?
b) If carbon tetrachloride was used instead of mercury, what would be the manometer reading
for the same pressure difference?

3. A force of 100lb is exerted on lever AB as shown. The end of B is connected to a piston which fits
into cylinder having a diameter of 2in. What force F in kg acts on the larger piston, if the volume
C and D is filled with sea water (1.03)

4. A rectangular gate of height h, with upper and lower edges horizontal is inclined at any angle
(<90O) with the vertical. Liquid stands on one side of the gate, the upper edge of the gate being
in the liquid surface. How far below the surface is the center of pressure?

5. Two vessels adjoining each other and containing different kinds of liquids are separated by a
watertight, frictionless cylindrical gate hinged at A as shown. The vessel at the left is enclosed
and contains water and air on top and the gage reads 84kpa. If both vessels measure 1.20m
wide, compute the horizontal force F passing through the center of the cylinder gate that will
hold the same in equilibrium. The right tank is filled with oil (0.75). Neglect the weight of the
gate.
