FLUID MECHANICS 2

1. A tank contains four layers of liquids, namely SAE 30 oil with sp. gr of 0.89, water, Olive oil with unknown specific gravity, and
mercury as shown in the figure. If atmospheric pressure is 101.1 kPa and the absolute pressure at the bottom of the tank is 390.3 kPa,
find the following: (See figure 1)
1a. The specific gravity of olive oil.
1b. The gage pressure at the interface of olive oil and mercury in kPa.
1c. If all fluids are to be replaced by Olive oil, what is the required height of olive oil (m) to make the pressure
at the bottom of the tank the same as the original condition?

2. A small circular jet of mercury 200m in diameter issues from an opening. What is the excess pressure (Pa) between the inside and
outside of the jet? of mercury = 0.514 N/m.

3. A piston of weight 21 lb slides in a lubricated pipe as shown in figure 2, the clearance between piston and pipe is 0.001 in. If the
piston decelerates at 2.1 ft/s2 when the speed is 21 ft/s, what is the viscosity of the oil in lb.s / ft2. ? (10 pts.)

4. A vertical triangle plane panel is submerged in water as shown. Calculate: (see figure 3 below)
a.) Total Hydrostatic force acting on the triangular panel in lbs.
b.) Location of center of pressure from point A in ft.

5. The flow of water from a reservoir is controlled by a 5ft wide L-shaped gate hinged at a point A as shown. Neglecting
effects of atmospheric pressure and neglecting the weight of the gate, find the following: (see figure 4 below)
a.) The corresponding height of water h (ft) that will prevent the gate from opening due to the weight W=30900lb.
b.) The total hydrostatic force (lb) that will prevent the gate from opening due to the weight W=30900lb.
c.) The distance of the total hydrostatic force from hinge A in ft.
