TASK 2: Solve fluids translating on a straight path at constant acceleration

fluids rotating with a constant angular speed.

A. Problem Solving
Instructions: Analyze and solve the following problems. Enclose your final an-
swer in a box.

1. The cross section for the fuel tank of an experimental vehicle shown in figure 1. The
rectangular tank is vented to the atmosphere and the specific gravity of the fuel is
sg=0.65. A pressure transducer is located in its side as illustrated. During the testing,
the tank is subjected to a constant linear acceleration, ay. Determine the maximum
acceleration that can occur before the fuel level drops below the transducer.

2. A tank 10m x 10m is filled with 2m of water is accelerated horizontally at 2.45m/s^2.

What is the minimum pressure acting at the bottom of the tank?. Assume the tank is
high enough to prevent spilling.

3. A column water in a vertical tube is being accelerated by a piston in the vertical di-
rection at 100m/s^2. The depth of the water column is 10cm. Find the gage pressure
on the piston.

4. A closed rectangular tank 4m long, 2m wide, 2m high is filled with water to a depth of
1.7m. If the allowable force at the rear wall of the tank is 180KN. How fast can it be
accelerated horizontally?

5. A vessel containing oil is accelerated on a plane inclined 20 degrees with the horizon-
tal at 2.23m/s^2. Determine the inclination of the oil surface(sg=0.82) when the mo-
tion is upwards and downwards.
B. Problem Solving
Instructions: Analyze and solve the following problems. Enclose your final answer in a box.

1. An open 2ft diameter tank contains water to a depth of 3ft when at rest. If the tank is ro-
tated about its vertical axis with an angular velocity of 180rpm, what is the minimum
height of the tank walls to prevent water from spilling over the sides?

2. A closed cylinder of radius 10cm, height of 30cm is filled with water. If the cylinder is ro-
tated about its vertical axis at a speed of 240rpm, determine the force exerted at the bot-
tom cover of the cylinder.

3. An open cylindrical tank has a base of 1.2 meters contains 3.86 meters deep of water.
The tank is rotated about its vertical axis at 80 rpm.
• What is the minimum height of the tank so that no water can be spilled at 80rpm?
• If w=120rpm, how many gallons of water is spilled?
• If w=140rpm, what will be the pressure at the center bottom of the tank?

4. When the U-tube is not rotated, the water stands in the tube as shown in the figure be-
low. If the tube is rotated about the eccentric axis at a rate of 8 rad/s, what are the new
levels of water in the tube?
