The Future of Shopping One evening last week, a man walked in to a supermarket in Seattle. He picked
up some vegetables, meat, tea and coffee. As he was going round, he noticed there were no shop
assistants anywhere. When he had finished, he put everything into a shopping bag. Then, instead of
going to the check-out to pay, he walked out of the store. Maybe you’re asking yourself why he wasn’t
arrested, but in fact he hadn’t done anything wrong. He was in one of America’s first completely
automatic supermarkets, and it has has no shop assistants. Before you go in, a machine takes the details
of your bank card. Inside the store, cameras use facial recognition technology to follow you round, and
they recognise and record everything that you pick up. When you leave, the central computer knows
exactly what you have bought and it works out your bill. When shoppers were asked how they felt about
the new system, they had different opinions. Many of the older shoppers said they didn’t like it, and said it
felt strange. Younger shoppers were much more positive. Cindy Havholm, 15, said she thought it was
‘awesome’. One of the problems of using new technology like this is that people often lose their jobs. It’s
something that factory workers know all about. Many of them have lost their jobs and the factories they
used to work in are now full of robots and computers. It’s not just factory jobs that are disappearing. You
can study almost anything on the Internet, and teaching software is getting better and better – so in the
future we may not need so many teachers. The same thing is happening to doctors, nurses, taxi drivers,
travel agents … the list goes on and on. Will this be a problem for young people? Will there be any jobs
for today’s teenagers in tomorrow’s world? The answer is probably yes. The good news is that when old
jobs disappear, new ones are created. Today’s young people will do different jobs, but most of these jobs
will be better-paid and more interesting than the ones people do today.
