Dear brothers and sisters of Our Lady of Lourdes:
 
 My sisters tell me I have a hearing loss. Well, that is partially true, accord-
ing to my audiologist. What I tell my sisters, however, is that I have an attention loss ±
distracted by sights and voices (especially in a large room). They insist I have a hearing
loss. Sigh.
 Paying attention is an art. In fact, it calls for intentional concentration. At
times, however, it calls for reflection after the fact; an honest openness to the meaning of
even a mysterious fact.
 A parishioner sent to me an account of a moment lived attentively, yet only
understood (partially) after the fact. Here it is. I hope that it encourages each of us to pay
attention not only to the moment but also to be more reflective ± and grateful.
 “A friend of mine from northern Illinois where I lived before I moved here
was telling me about an experience he had that neither he nor the priest he spoke
to could really explain.It goes like this. 
 “He picked up a young man who was hitchhiking in his area.This is not
something he ordinarily does.This fellow was trying to get home to see his grandmother
and the address was not far from where my friend worked.It was winter with lots of
snow on the ground.
 “The house was easy to get to and the young fellow was very grateful for
the help.My friend waited before driving away to go on to work to make sure the
young man got inside.The house was all lit up and sure enough his grandmother
answered the door so my friend drove on to work.(I need to add here that the
drive had not been plowed nor were the steps or sidewalk shoveled.)
 “After my friend arrived at work he explained that he had given a lift to a
very nice young man who was traveling to visit his grandmother and he commented on
where he had dropped off the fellow.One of his coworkers, knowing where the
house was, said that was impossible as that house had been vacant for some time. 
 “My friend checked out the house on his lunch hour and the house was
empty, dark and there was no evidence that his car had been on that drive. The house
had a for sale sign in yard.The footprints of the young man in the snow werenot there
either. 
 “My friend spoke to a priest friend of his about this.I might also add my
friend is a deacon and has been for some years. The priest was at a loss to explain it
