Assignment Brief
You are required to do the structural analysis of a three-storey building. Primary beams
and columns will be constructed using structural steel. Input data for each student are
presented in Table 1 depending on the last two digits in your student K number.
Assuming that flat roofs provide no access apart from normal maintenance and the
snow load is not critical. You are requested to choose one frame in the short elevation
view, i.e. frames with dimensions of L1 x H where L1 is the short side of the building
footprint, and H is the building height, to analyse structural behaviour using Robot
Structural Analysis software. Detailed tasks and assessment criteria are shown in
Table 2.

The specific requirements are as follows,

 Each storey must have a clear floor-to-ceiling height of 4 m with L1 m x L2 m
footprint. Assume that the span upper limit is 9.5 m.
 Floor imposed loads are to be applied to the structure in accordance with
Eurocode 1 EN 1991-1-1:2002, depending on the specific use of the floors.
 The floor dead load of 2.xy kN/m2 is to be included where appropriate as an
allowance for lightweight partitions, raised floors, ceilings and services, where
 Wind pressure acting on the windward area is 1.xy kN/m2, and on the leeward
area is 0.xy kN/m2.
where x is the second last and y is the last digit in your K number.

As an example, a student with K00456789 with the second last digit = 8 (even number)
and last digit = 9 will use the dataset numbered 20 in which L1 = 20 m, L2 = 42 m, the
floors are for Offices (general); the floor dead load is 2.89 kN/m2; wind pressure on the
windward area is 1.89 kN/m2 and on the leeward area is 0.89 kN/m2.

Note that where the input data is not available, suitable values can be assumed by
students.

Calculate the applied actions (permanent and variable)
for the frame in accordance with appropriate

combinations (Ultimate Limit States: Persistent and
Transient Design situations).
Consider Frame A-A,
a) identify the critical beam in terms of bending
Five moment and determine the pertinent load combination. 20
b) identify the critical column in terms of axial force and
determine the pertinent load combination.

Note, a 10-mark extra will be added if a good comparison of results from 2D and
3D simulations is performed. However, the total mark does not exceed 100.
