5 Introduction Note
The API 610 "Centrifugal Pumps for Petroleum, Petrochemical and Natural Gas
Industries" and its appendices - eleventh edition, September 2010 is considered as
part of this specification.
The API paragraph numbers are indicated in parenthesis.
Only those paragraphs of the API 610 standard which have been deleted, completed
(Addition), totally modified (Substitution) or partially modified (Clarification) by
the present specification are mentioned. The other paragraphs of the API 610 which
are not mentioned remain applicable.
Those paragraphs that do not refer to an API 610 paragraph numbers are additional
paragraphs.
Mechanical equipments to be used in hazardous area shall be selected in accordance
with the area where they will be installed.
6 Basic Design
6.1 (6.1) General
6.1.1 (6.1.3) (Clarification)
When the specific gravity of any of the fluids being pumped is less than 1, at any
pumping temperature applicable to that fluid, the vendor shall ensure that the pump
and its accessories shall be able to operate without deterioration during the
performance test with water. Performance tests at reduced speeds shall require
Purchaser written approval prior to any purchase order.
6.1.2 (6.1.4) (Clarification)
The proposed rated impeller diameter for pumps with constant speed drivers shall be
no greater than 95% or less than 80% of the maximum impeller diameter that can be
installed in the pump casing.
For pumps with variable speed drivers, the impeller diameter giving the maximum
efficiency shall be selected. If this results in the selected impeller diameter being the
maximum for the chosen casing, then the driver and pump shall be capable of the
speed increase necessary to give a 5% increase in head (per API 610 clause 6.1.4)
and to correct any head shortfall during testing, including the tolerance per API 610
table 16.
For overhung impellers the tip speed of the selected impeller, at the rated operating
point, shall not exceed 62 m/s.

The present document or drawing is property of SAUDI ARABIAN OIL COMPANY and TOTAL RAFFINAGE CHIMIE S.A. and
shall not, under any circumstances, be totally or partially, directly or indirectly, transferred, reproduced, copied, disclosed or

6.1.3 (6.1.8) (Clarification)

The NPSHR specified on the data sheets and the performance curve shall correspond
to the rated impeller diameter.
For all pumps, the margin between NPSHA and NPSHR shall not be less than 1 m
at rated point. NPSHR shall not be less than NPSHA up to 120% of the rated
capacity. For pumps specified to operate in parallel with other pumps the margin
between NPSHA and NPSHR shall not be less than 0.5 m up to 120% of the rated
capacity. For variable speed pumps, the above NPSH requirements apply for all
speeds required to meet the specified operating conditions. If an inducer is proposed,
the vendor shall provide in the proposal the test NPSH curve for similar equipment.
6.1.4 (6.1.9) (Clarification)
For all pumps, with exception of pumps having speed of 6000 RPM or higher, the
suction specific speed, based on the NPSH required for 3% first stage head drop at
best efficiency capacity, without inducer, shall be limited as indicated in the table
below:
Suction specific speed Q in M3/sec, Q in M3/hr Q in USGPM
S=N(Q)0.5/(NPSHR)0.75 NPSHR in Metres NSPHR in ft

Maximum allowable

specification shall be verified.
8.3.8 (8.3.3.7) (Clarification)
All pumps shall be disassembled for inspection upon completion of satisfactory
performance testing.
The points below shall be verified:
− bearings
− impeller diameters
− verification of functional clearances
− hardness and marking of the hardness of wear rings
− condition and fixing of wear rings
− identification and verification of two-part components (such as the casing wear
rings, central bearing, constriction bushing, etc.).
− Conformity of mechanical seals.
Any modification of the pump to improve mechanical or hydraulic performance will
require that the modified part is re-balanced (if applicable) and the applicable
mechanical and/or performance tests shall be repeated.
