ESM Assignment 1

1. Differentiate between collinear and concurrent forces?

2. What is the difference between a resultant force and equilibrant force?

3. What is a free body diagram?

4. In the figure below, find the coordinates of point A so that the 361 N force will have a
clockwise moment of 500 N-m about O. Also determine the Y intercept of the action
line of the force.
(yA = 3.0 m; Yi = 1.66 m above O)

5. For the truss shown in figure, compute the perpendicular distance from E and from G
to the line DF.
(Hint: Imagine a force P directed along DF. The required distances are the moment
arms of P about E and G.)

(Perpendicular distance of line BD from E and G is 15.78’ and 17.75’ respectively)

6. An electric light fixture is held with the arrangement as shown in figure. If the weight
of the fixture is 20 kg and the hinge is an ideal one, determine the axial forces in the
bar and the string.
[F1 = 523.59 N (Tensile), F2 = 485.46 N (Compressive)]

7. In the four-bar mechanism ABCD, as shown in figure, determine the force P for
equilibrium.
(P = 261.98 N)
