From rice importer to self sufficiency”, it was written in one of gold medal sides, given
by Director-general of FAO who delivered appreciation from UN to the President of Republic
of Indonesia, because of his service in making Indonesia becomes state with self-sufficiency in
food, at the time, July 1986 Director-general of FAO, called Soeharto as a symbol for
International agriculture development. In comparison with our situation, now Indonesia
becomes one of the biggest rice importing Country, Ironically, doesn’t it ? according to this
situation, why don’t we learn from the past ?. Based on our experience in handling this
problem, at last 4 steps required to build settled condition in the domain of agriculture. The
steps are, intensification, extensification, diversification and the last is rehabilitation.

Intensification is the why to increase agriculture product quality by cultivate seed,

fertilize farm and eradicate pests. after choosing the seeds farmer is expected to do seeding
with a good technique as well as fertilization. Fertilization seems modest nevertheless without
appropriate portion, it can make unusual growth for our plants. The last part of intensification
is pests eradication. The Farmer can eradicate pests by spraying pesticide according to the
operating guide as a result, intensification is a basic principle of agriculture which need
assiduity and tenacity.
The second steps, in order to raise Agriculture Product in number and quality are
extensificaton. Extensification means to extend agriculture farm. The Farmer can extend their
farm by open a new area of a forest, opening a new area of the forest can be done two ways;
Chopping down the forest and the other ones by burning a cortain area of the forest. By
Chopping down the trees, a Farmer shall Replace the trees with replanting a new seeds of the
trees, Hence it does not brake down the reservation of the forest. If the Farmer choose to
burn a certain area of the forest, he must ensure that combustion will not extend to the whole
forest and endanger human life.
The Third step if raising agriculture Production is diversification, diversification means
to cultivate more than one kinds of plants. The Farmer can diversify his farm with planting
another crops around, such as spinach course, mustard, cannot, etc. Crops it means that he
will double his earnings.
The last step is rehabilitation.In order to keep the land fertile for the next cultivation,
The farmer should rehabilitate his farm by giving fertilizer hopefully, the land fertile is always
in standard condition therefore, after harvest, The farmer can start to cultivate another plants
without worrying about soil fertile and its effect.

Through circumstantial contemplation, we can conclude that frame of emulating

advance countries, not depend on our industry, mining and Tourism sector only, nevertheless
we can optimize our Agriculture sector by mainly concern with 4 major steps; Intensification,
extensification, diversification and rehabilitation as a result all of us expect that we, Indonesian
Nation can redo a golden period of our agriculture, 22 years ago, that brought our country in
property.
