14 Activity: Coffee Filters

The activities in each module are designed to develop Starbucks
partners' coffee knowledge and skills. If you are a customer learning
about coffee, welcome! While you may not have the equipment or
training resources necessary for all activities, you may still find it
possible to complete some of them at home.

Activity: Coffee Filters

20 minutes

We know different coffees and brew methods yield different results in

the cup. The filter plays a large role by affecting the flavor clarity and
mouthfeel of the brewed coffee.
:
This activity builds on the Four Fundamentals by exploring the impact
of filters - the important device that separates the coffee grounds from
the finished beverage.

Tip: Filters are made from materials that include metal, paper and cloth.
A coffee press or Clover® brewer uses a metal filter while batch
brewing and pour-overs use paper filters.

Activity

1. Select – Choose one coffee to brew on two different brew

methods
2. Observe – What do you notice about the filter for each brew
method? How do you think the different filters will impact the
finished beverage?
3. Brew – Brew both coffees
4. Taste – Follow the tasting steps
5. Describe – Use available coffee resources to help you describe
each coffee. What is the difference between the two coffees? Do
you have a favorite?
6. Record – Take a few minutes to write down in your journal how
you can use your understanding of great water, fresh coffee and
filter types to help a customer find a brew method that they will
love
