Objectives:
Through this piece students will be able to:
1) Sing Silent Night with dynamic expression.
2) Sing Silent Night and Angels we have heard with accurate execution of rhythms.
3)Sing Silent Night with a focused tone.
Preparatory Exercises:
Warmups: (choose warmups that lead to appropriate vocal production for
this piece)
Rehearsal of Piece:
1: First Teacher will review Silent Night with students and have all parts sing from
m. 23 to m. 29.
2: Then Teacher will have tenors and basses sing their part together on “doo” while
sopranos and altos hum. Teacher will take time to correct any tonal imperfections
and pitch inaccuracies.
3: Teacher will repeat this with sopranos and altos while tenors and basses hum.
With this group, Teacher will especially focus on their tone and ensure that students
are using the “doo” syllable to produce a brighter and more forward tone.
4: Teacher will then have both parts sing this section together on “doo”. Teacher will
instruct students to pay attention to the dynamic and expressive markings that were
reviewed at the last rehearsal.
5: Teacher will repeat steps 1-4 from m. 59 to m. 82. Teacher will remind the
sopranos and altos about making m. 67 to 70 musical and singing with a sense of
dynamic push and pull.
6: Students will sing from the beginning of the piece to m. 82 incorporating all the
skills worked on during the previous steps.
7: Teacher will have students turn to m. 5 of Angels We Have Heard. Teacher will
have basses and baritones sing from m. 5 to m. 12 on “ba”. Teacher will correct any
rhythmic or pitch inaccuracies, especially for the last 2 eighth notes of m. 12.
8: Teacher will have students speak their rhythm on “ba” while clapping a steady
beat to ensure rhythmic accuracy. Then, they will sing it again without clapping.
