Understanding Educational Psychology

Learning is a lifelong endeavor. People don’t only learn at school, they
learn at work, in social situations and even doing simple tasks like household
chores or running errands. In line with this, Ambrose defined learning as a
process that leads to change, which occurs because of experience and increases
the potential for improved performance and future learning. We may say that
the change in the learner may happen at the level of knowledge, attitude, or
behavior. This topic made me think how educational psychology can help
improve the poor performance of our learners especially now that we are facing
the aftermath of the pandemic. The two-year gap in learning causes difficulty in
learning and it affects the emotional and psychological aspect of our learners.
As a teacher, we always look for the welfare and needs of our learners. In
addition, there are four school conditions for learning: physical and emotional
health and safety; sense of belonging, connectedness, and support; academic
challenge and engagement; and social and emotional competence for learners.
With this, we, as educators, not only focus on the academic needs of our learners
but also on the other contributing factors that hinder their learning process.
Communication is the key. We must reach to their hearts and listen with
passion. It’s important to build rapport with them and earn their trust.
