MATH 100 - M6.

1
 STATISTICS
- A branch of mathematics dealing with the
collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of
masses of numerical data.
- A collection of quantitative data.

 BRANCHES OF STATISTICS

1. DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS is concerned with

summarizing and describing numerical data through
the use of tables, graphs, and charts.

2. INFERENTIAL STATISTICS is concerned with

generalizing information or making inference about a
population based on a sample observed.

 MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

- it is a single value that used to identify the center of

the data and is considered as the typical value in a set of
scores
- can maybe also called a center or location in a
distribution.
- it tends to lie within the center if the observation
(data) are arranged from the lowest to highest or vice
versa.
- 3 measures of tendency are: mean, mode, and
median.

1. mean( x )
- also called as Arithmetic mean or average.
- is the most commonly used measure of central
tendency.
- it is found by taking the sum of all the data values
and then dividing the result by the numbers of values. It
can be affected by extreme scores.
- it is stable, and varies less from sample to sample.
- the mean is the balance point of a score distribution.

MEAN OF UNGROUPED DATA

x 1+x + x +...+ x ∑x
x= 2 3 n
=
n n

To find the mean for a set of data, find the sum of the
data values and divide by the number of data values.
For instance, to find the mean of the 5 salaries
listed below.

$ 43,750 $ 39,500 $ 38,000

$ 41,250 44,000
$ 43,750+ $ 39,500+ $ 38,000
+$ 41,250+ 44,000
5

$ 206,500
¿ =$ 41,300
